Videogames.com news has posted an article saying the XBox may retail for $400 when it goes on sale ($400 = £400 by some strange quirk of maths so that's bad news for us as well). Given that, by the time it's released, the PS2 will have fallen in price (probably to about £200) and the GameCube will be in everyones face at some ridiculously low price that Nintendo are flaunting.
In Japan at least, there is very little interest in the console so the chances of major success there are small anyway. If it's priced at twice as much as it's most expensive competitor it'll have to be far better than them both so that people will even consider buying it.
Serves them right for nicking someone elses name - then again what do you expect from Microsoft.
Gamecube is still, so it seems, a lot cheaper than the X-Box... another expression to add.
Then things like graphical capability, controller ports, DVD access, internet access, and so on would be the main part of the equation.
So if every game was available on all consoles, the X-Box would win, even though it has the same processor speed and memory as the Gamecube, it has DVD access, which is something the Gamecube hasn't got. Although having the GBA attached to it is a nice extra, DVD would win hands down I expect... unless you already had a very decent DVD player... in which case perhaps Gamecube would win.
But when games come into the equation, then Nintendo wins. Hands down, in my opinion... It also gives a few more brownie points to each console, for having their own exclusive titles.
Industry types think it will cost an absolute minimum of $300 with a figure as high as $500 being possible (although surely they'd have to sell it at a loss or sell none at all at that sort of price).
What would be really helpful is if we could actually see the two machines running the same game side by side, like Gran Turismo or Quake.
Even better, how about those two machines AND a Gamecube all lined up on a desk playing Deus Ex, maybe then we could make better informed judgements about relative values.
But of course, this ain't never gonna happen. Is it?
(In case you are wondering, my sources in this instance were a fortune cookie and my speculative insight.)
