I heard the guys who organised that stunt went to work for Sega's marketing division.

Sony were obviously marketing him as a mascot then... is that who you meant by Taz?
Sega always had Sonic and Nintendo always had Mario, but nowadays, with such a massive range of games, I think console manufacturers find it hard enough to find any identity, so they concentrate on console image rather than a particular character being associated with it.
Anyway, do any of you think that Sony are marketing Snake as their new mascot? I hadn't really noticed... but I expect they would of if Konami weren't making for X-Box, and hinting at Gamecube as well...
