Right, I've decided it's finally time to sort myself out and put my Walkman to the grave. It's a great Walkman, mind, imported from Japan, finished in chrome but that's not the issue here.

I've decided to get a MD player but I wish to know whether anyone can recommend one to me? Obviously I'll be backing up all my cd's onto it.

So, opinions will be greatly received. Stupid half-wit comments won't.

Yup, but that's using ATRAC3, which is better than the equivalent MP3 at similar rates. My albums on MD sound no worse than they used to on the Rio 500 at 96Kbps.

When you're listening through tiny headphones on the move, with lots of background noise, you don't really need the ultimate in quality.

Battery life on the MZ-N1 when playing LP4 discs is over 110 hours, so that's not an issue!

Im all for mp3 players me... the battery life on an mp3 player is much longer if u get a solid memory one as opposed to spindle based minidisc player, less hassle transferring files as well

Or you can by 10 blank MDs for about £10, and using MDLP (MiniDisc Long Play), you can fit 4 albums onto one MD. That's 40 albums on 10 discs, for a tenner.

I used to have a Diamond Rio 500, but sold it in favour of MD.

Well it worked out ok for me because i bought one with 128MB built it and it takes upto another 256MB of smart media... And i have 128MB smart media card, so i can just bung that in and have about eight albums...

But both are good i think, i mean i use mini disks all the time because i have one built into my stereo, so they are good too...

Because you can do exactly the same with an MD player, and blank MDs are still far cheaper than blank memory for MP3 players.

That was my reasoning, anyway.

I'd recommend a Sony NetMD player/recorder.

I have the MZ-N1 and wouldn't change it for anything else.

Generally if you record your CDs to MD you have to play the CD in full to record it, but with the NetMD you can rip the CDs to your PC and download them to MD at up to 32x speed.

Sony supply software to do this, but it's got their own quirky copy protection system. I'd recommend getting RealOne (just the free version), as it supports the NetMD via a plugin and does away with all the unnecessary hassles integral to Sony's own software.
