WHA???

Both teams were going at it, and if I remember, it was Arsenal that started the match all fired up, Man Utd we're up for it but Arsenal seemingly went out there to hurt people, jealousy is a terrible thing :P

Well, Arsenal gave every Utd fan in the world the leverage to label them arrogant when, despite dropping an "unassailable" lead to be eventually quite comfortably beaten to the title, they still claim to be "the best football team in england". Surely the Premiership title goes to the team that has performed the best over the course of the season?

At the end of the day, this time around, Utd were the better team - 4 out of 6 points from Arsenal themselves in the process.

Of course, it could well be all change this season, it all depends on what cover we can provide for Beckham, now he's sunning it up in the second best league in the world. If we keep Veron, that's a good start, but we'll need a little more, and Arsenal may well have what it takes to make advantage of that weakness. And if you don't, Chelsea will, or even Newcastle.

You might take note of the fact that I'm writing off Liverpool's chances...

A Man U fan calling another team arrogant. That's a laugh! :-) But then as Beckham himself said - you have to be arrogant if you want to win anything. I think Arsenal became more complacent than anything else.

I disagree about the lack of 'fight' - many times we've fought back from behind to win games, and did you forget the FA Cup game against Man U last last season, where you tried to kick us off the pitch?

There are few teams that can compete with the current Arsenal squad in full flow... the only problem is in reproducing that standard through the whole season.

Also, considering the gulf in disposable income, I think Arsenal are doing an amazing job. Even with the new stadium, I believe Arsenal will keep the players they have. They simply have to, or the new stadium isn't worth building.

Personally, I think we lost a great deal when Adams retired. Not only his commanding presence, but the confidence he gave to the rest of the team as well.

Last season we had some lengthy injuries. The season before, we also had injuries, but not to so many key players at the same time.

I expect us to be up there again this season, without any major signings, because we have a perfectly good squad as it is. I believe we need 3 or 4 players - a keeper (obviously), a central defender, and quality cover for Cole and Lauren, whether that be 2 players, or 1 who can play either side. We don't *really* need any more strikers, and we certainly don't need any more midfielders.

Yes, but Utd had themselves a more solid financial structure for that period as well, and weren't on the verge of being forced to sell to survive.

It's all very well your chairman saying "not for £70 million", but if the bid came in at anywhere near that for Henry or Viera, he'd quite simply HAVE to take it.

The way I see it, is that Arsenal believe they are better than anyone else, and it's this arrogance - and it is arrogance, on a player by player basis - that has seen them stumble. They almost expect teams stand by and watch their pretty football, when they should really get in as much as possible and create the result.

It's this grit determination that makes, in my opinion, Man Utd the best team in England. Arsenal are very good, no mistake, but they lack a physical and mental edge, and I don't mean physical in terms of Bergkamp love-tapping every player who gets in his way, or mental in terms of self-belief, but often, some Arsenal players seem to tire when made to fight for a game, and their heads seem to go down only too quickly when things aren't going their way.

United have the physical ability, you only need to compare Henry with Ruud (again, heh) to see that Van Nistelrooy has more power in terms of all over body strength, and can fight for results (within the scope of the rules of course). And mentally? When Utd go behind, their heads don't drop, they rise to the challenge, and only too often surpass it.

But all that aside, you have to admit that Arsenal's stadia plans are a financial timebomb, and the player's patience with it is ticking away very quickly.

i dunno its in major danger of collapse in reality your players of value and substance are:

Campbell
Cole
Ljungberg
Viera
Gilberto
Pires
Henry
Wiltord

Arsenal's most valuable player without a doubt is viera, he makes up for his substandard CENTRE midfield partners and for the lack of another decent centre back. Second most valuable is actually Sol Campbell without him the whole defence would be lost he is the arsenal back line and coles the only other one worth his money. Henry is the third most essential his goals are critical and he is clearly the best striker in the league.

The main problem is that if you lose viera, your defence is exposed and your attack undersupplied, as your defence is frail already that would lead to a collapse from the back as campbell can't do it all. If viera hasn't signed a new contract by the start of the season they really have to sell him immediately to the highest bidder so as to give themselves funds to get a replacement, as if he leaves for free they won't be able to afford one.

Realistically they will probably get 15 mill for him due to his contractual status playing of against him being one of the best CMF's in the world. They can't afford to let him go for free so if he doesn't sign their hand will be forced. I'd expect somebody like van bommel or davids to be the likely figures to be bid for as they rush to replace him.

The next month is critical to arsenal, they are either gonna become stronger as a result of him signing and allowing them to strengthen elsewhere if necessary, or it will be a very different new look vieraless arsenal when the season kicks off.

At the end of the day, we have a squad that would be the envy of 99% of the world's football teams.

Then we have individual players that are the envy of (if htey're honest), every club in the world.

Keeping them is the problem, obviously. However, I get frustrated by the (apparent) talk of some - even non-Arsenal - players who bemoan "lack of ambition" and the like. And that does include the likes of Vieira.

As good as all these players are, they themselves are often responsible for results. It doesn't matter who's in the team or what the manager says - when you're out on the pitch, it's down to *you*.

Last season was a disappointment for Arsenal, as they should have had the Premiership sewn up. But it was far from a disaster.

In fact, in terms of managerial success and the length of time the team has actually been together, we are currently more successful than Man United. Five major trophies in the first five years of a new manager taking over and assembling a new squad, and an ever-present in the Champion's League, even if the results have been frustrating.

That's far more than Ferguson/United managed in the same time frame - so it's a million miles from being a disaster!
