British Empire never seems to exist in my generations minds anymore. I know its nothing (if anything) to what it was, but the fact that Britain once had the largest empire ever in history, and that in fact it did a lot of good things (as well as bad - as with any empire) is seemingly forgotten. By my generation anyway.
At least Norway respects us by sending over a Christmas tree each year; the Americans just take our history from us.
I bet in ten years time they'll claim that we made them go to war with Iraq.
Anything else is pantywaist ignorance.
U571...please...
It's the story of a German U-Boat on patrol during the second world war.
The tension and realism in this German classic beats films like U-571 to a bloody pulp.
It was originally shown as a T.V mini series in the eighties, and is based on actual events in the north Atlantic,I can't recommend it highly enough for anybody who's never seen it.

Indeed.
I have Red October, Crimson Tide, K-19 and Das Boot. Still need to watch Das Boot... but anyway, U-571 was a decent film. Bill Paxton was in it for a few minutes, which was good.
Apart from re-writing history (I remember arguing with an American who'd seen it and thought we had nothing to do with it) it was pretty good. You know the bit at the end where they say who actually got the Enigma machines? That was added after the outcry from non-Americans.
All credit to jon he said "someday i'll be on, on saturday night' and it was true
The characters where pretty unspectacular as well, the loud moth cowboy type who isn't afraid to voice his mind to the skipper, the token black guy who was only there because he was the only token black guy in the film and a German prisoner who served no purpose in the story whatsoever.
Like I said, some nice action scenes including the sub on sub action near the beginning, and Keitel was great I thought, but a good film this is not.
It was good.
