I was on Special Reserve looking at their digital cameras when I realised that all the statistics were just technical jargon to me. Because of this I went on to MSN and asked my friend to give me a hand when choosing the digi-cam for me. Unfortunately his reply was simply "Why do you do that?", "You don't need a camera", "You all ways waste money just to get the best of the best" etc etc Naturally I enquired further to find out what he meant by all of that. He started saying I always buy the best in everything like TVs even though I don't even have my own TV and that I had the best mobile phone even though my mobile phone (Motorola V.50) is terrible in comparison to everyone else. Just because I spent £120 on it and theirs were cheaper due to sliding mobile phone prices. As a matter of fact one of my friends mobiles who's is better than mine cost £140!

He went on to say that I get spoon-fed and that I'm spoiled because my parents give me £50 for nothing as an allowance of sorts. Even though I've had two paper rounds before and have worked for about a month in a restaurant but since I'm underage (15) it was just really me subbing for a wee while. What should I do to stop them thinking I'm simply a spoiled brat? I feel I'm at the age that I should be quitting paper rounds, not starting them, I'm too young to get and actual job and I'm obviously not going to throw away £50 a month. Any suggestions?

Oops. I meant £20 a month. £20 a week would've been quite nice, though. :-D

Ah, didn't read one of your later replies. £50 a month is nothing, I get £100 for doing nothing more than a little bit of house work from time to time (dishwasher, stuff like that) When I'm working I don't get anything from my parents.

Cubist, you do sound like a spoilt brat. Then again, I get money from my parents, but that's to keep me going with food and clothes and stuff. All the stuff I own (widescreen TV, high end PC, PS2, X-Box, hi fi, MP3 players, my gym stuff etc) I paid for myself, mostly from working. The rest is from money I've saved by cutting down on drinking and stuff.

If you're getting £50 (a week?) then it's no surprise your mates think you're a little biatch. Get a paper round until you're 16, then get a job if that's what you want. But you shouldn't do it because of what your mates think, go to work if you need or want the money.

My parents are splitting the cost of driving lessons with me, which pleases one.

I get £12 a month if I can be bothered to work for it. (Not doing much, just making my bed, doing the washing up occassionally). If don't work for it or forget to ask I don't get it. Can't say fairer than that. If I need money for something then I start working doing odd-jobs around the house (weeding the drive, washing my parents/brothers/sisters/ cars etc).

£50 a month *is* a lot by any standards. The best thing to do really is shove some in an account and just stick it out with your friends.

Jesus Christ! I used to get two pound a week max and then after that I had to work day and night on a paperound just to earn about 12 pound a week!

Plus 20 pound a week is 80 pound a month which is more than cubit gets. which is 50 pound a month.

Also my pound sign is broke.

Well I do try and save money but whenever I get save up a reasonable amount I end up spending it by going to the cinema fri,sat and sun with trips into town during the day.

I dont believe I am self indulgent and spoiled but I don't believe my friends are jealous either. We all get good stuff and do great things at one point or another so there is nothing to be jealous about. I think my mate just likes to argue with me. Of course if anyone asks I'll be the one who's argumentative heh.

Up until 13 or 14 I got £20 a week, which is a little less than what you're getting. :-)

Then by that time I got myself some small jobs and stuff and made my own money.

You shouldn't be bothered by what your 'friends' think about you getting money. You probably just get more than them and they're jealous... or something.

£50 seems like a lot.

Maybe save some of it, just chuck some in a savings account and don't touch it for a few years.

And think about whether you really need something before you buy it.

But ultimately it's up to you. If you believe you're spoiled and self-indulgent, you can do something about it.
If you think you aren't then maybe your friend is jealous, maybe he just disagrees. Whatever. *Shrugs*
