Why is there a big difference in price between a 2.6 and a 2.8 processor...

AMD AthlonXP PR2600+ (OEM)
333FSB - 2083 Mhz - OEM - Requires Cooler
£62.37£73.28 Including VAT at 17.5%

AMD AthlonXP PR2800+ (RTL)
333FSB - Includes Cooler
Online Price £117.65£138.24 Including VAT at 17.5

That is alot of price difference for not alot os noticable speed difference...
When i first bought one i got a 2.4, i was then going to go upto a 2.8 but the price difference was just rediculasly stupid...

ffs

It's not a few more MHZ. In fact if you had ANY clue you'd know it's no more MHZ at all, what it is is a completely different core - well ok, not completely different, but different fab nonetheless, and also it has more L2 cache which equals more speed. THAT's why it costs more.

It's always been the case.

Ever since I can remember, there's always been a certain point where a couple of mhz extra can cost up to £100 more.

It's simple, you don't buy the more expensive one when you won't notice a difference.

Unless you're a fool.

They just are. XP2800's are more difficult to manufacture than XP2600's so there aren't as many of them on the market, meaning prices are high. As XP2800's become more commonplace and other chips begin to supercede them market forces will drive the price down. That's all it is - market forces. That's why it's a mugs game to buy a top-end CPU, it's actually worth a small fraction of what you pay for it.

I've found:

AMD AthlonXP 2600 [2.08GHZ 333] OEM
£75.20 including VAT

AMD AthlonXP 2600 [2.08GHZ 333] RET
£78.73 including VAT

Heh. Not much difference in retail and OEM there.

For the 2800:

AMD AthlonXP 2800 [2.08GHZ 333] OEM
£129.25 inc. VAT

AMD AthlonXP 2800 [2.08GHZ 333] RET
£139.83 inc. VAT

2600 is Thoroughbred B and 2800 is Barton.
Has to be the reason for the price difference.

But what I'm saying is that the reason it might be so much more expensive, even without the cooler (say £50 more) is because they have different CPU cores and different amounts of cache.
