Yes, the forums are withering, decaying like a rotting corpse. This change has been gradual but it's been in the post since the withdrawal of the GAD. Die-hards said it wouldn't affect them, some even tried to have a revolution or uprising and make the forums a better place...but it doesn't seem to have worked. More people have left, there are only a few Notables around (incidentally, how many notables are there?) and only a few familiar "faces" grace us with their spectral presence.
This is a lament for the forums.

The forum are not the same as they were when I joined.
Sure there was a lot of GAD attempts, but most of them were pretty good. Hence there was a bit more effort and thought that went into the posts. There are a lot of idiots around here. Once in a while they grow up a bit and make a decent contribution.
I think it's quite sad to watch the slide in standards.
But it isn't all to do with their being more idiots. Some of the old faces for whatever reason stop logging on. Even RBS doesn't post much now.

I'm not blaming anyone, it's just a general observation. When I first came on the scene a while ago, there were regular posters who'd actually have something decent to say and could post thought provoking subjects. Nowadays it's just the general booboisie that dismays me. We see bizarre and frankly absurd topics that tend to invoke smouldering fury within me. These days there are only a few people with something decent to say.

The widthdrawl of GAD has only smothered the ugly breakouts of blatant Gameaday attempts which infected the forums from time to time.
That being said, I won't deny that the forums are in decline. They have been for almost as long as I can remember now. It's not caused by the removal of free games, but by the introduction of complete idiots.
Actually, that's a little unfair. Replace 'complete idiots' with 'people who's posts have failed to inspire any interest from me on any occasion' and you've got a more diplomatic version.
To be honest though, that's nobody's fault. I'm nearly twenty, so there's obviously very little I have in common with kids in their early teens, which I assume is the general demographic of at least FOG chat, if not several of the other forums on SR now.
So who is to blame for the forums just not being interesting?
You could blame parents for not making the effort to give their own children education and experience.
You could blame Special Reserve for trying to appeal to the majority.
You could blame the government for poor education.
Or, you could blame video games for curtailing intellectual development.

I have to say, I haven't noticed the forums getting worse or dying as people seem to put it. I just see more idiots than ever posting rubbish.

Take a look at most of the topics. I dont think it's anything to do with GAD gone, I think it's to do with the internet allowing any cabbage with a modem to mash keys with their forehead rod and voila! I end up reading something that my breakfast could have posted better.
Some topics are good and interesting, others are devoid of soul, intelligence, brevity or wit.
