Okay i know i need a router and cabling but where should i read up about this from? I can't afford to network 2 computers quite yet but it would be nice to learn how to allow this pc and my new one to share a broadband connection. I hav 512k so would sharing the broadband connection would it mean 256K split between the computers? Or is that only when one of the computers is downloading at high speeds?
Any sites would help.

www.practicallynetworked.com is a pretty reasonable help site. You have two choices - allow one computer to act as the internet gateway for the other computer, or get a router to take care of both. The former means the gateway PC has to be on whenever the other computer wants access to the internet, the latter means you have to buy a router :O)

You won't get more than 60KB/s no matter what you do on a 512Kb/s connection. Generally if one computer is downloading something and the other isn't, that computer will get all the bandwidth. If both computers are downloading heavily, the results might be a bit erratic as to how the bandwidth is shared between them. No doubt a decent hardware router allows you to lock how much bandwidth each client machine uses, but don't quote me on that, as I've never configured one :O)

Yes the internet connection would thus be slower on each of the computers however you can barely notice it. At 512k, you probly get a maximum of 80k/s download speed. Well if you were downloading at that speed, another computer could still download at about 20k/s. It doesn't dramatically effect it. The best place to get a router is:

http://www.netshop.co.uk

And i recommend the D-Link DSL-504. A fantastic router with smart switch (if you don't know what that is, it learns about the usual processes of the LAN). Also you would then need network cards in the computers.

Any questions on networking just ask in this space, I'd be happy to fill u in on n e thing. Sorry I can't suggest n e sites but I know it all myself so I'm sure that must help.
