I want to be able to transfer files between my computer and my friends computer via a VPN or a direct connection. The only problem is, both of our computers are connected on ethernet via a router and the router shares our DSL connections throughout the house hence making every computer invisible to the internet. This means that wen a connection request is sent, the computer sending the request sends it through the router no problem but then wen it reaches the other end it can penetrate no further than the router and obvioulsy a router doesn't have software set up on it, it is a residential gateway. How can I fix this??? Can i suggest to the internet connection that it is a proxy??? If so, wot settings do i put???

Please help!

If you want to do two-way transfers, probably the easiest way is for you both to install web-servers (www.apache.org) and both to enable port forwarding on your respective routers. Web-servers traditionally run on port 80, but I would choose a different port if I were you, otherwise anyone doing a casual scan of your ip address would pick up that you're running a web-server.

What about setting up FTPs on your computer and your friends? Or if hes a friend that lives 5 mins away then why not copy files to a CDR or CDRW or even a Zip disk.
