I want to be able to transfer files between my computer and my friends computer via a VPN or a direct connection. The only problem is, both of our computers are connected on ethernet via a router and the router shares our DSL connections throughout the house hence making every computer invisible to the internet. This means that wen a connection request is sent, the computer sending the request sends it through the router no problem but then wen it reaches the other end it can penetrate no further than the router and obvioulsy a router doesn't have software set up on it, it is a residential gateway. How can I fix this??? Can i suggest to the internet connection that it is a proxy??? If so, wot settings do i put???

Please help!

ftp is weirder than that, it requires different settings depending on whether it's in passive or active mode, and the network red tape between ss and his mate is likely to make either a right hassle to set up, which is why I suggested setting up web-servers instead :o

Right, to enable MSN file transfers you need to do port forwarding.

Go to your router's configuration, and forward external ports 6891, 6892 and 1503 to the IP of your computer that you want to do file transfers on.

You need to open up port 21 on your router (this is what all ftp clients use) and then you will need to forward that port to your computer on your network.

All routers are different so asking how to do that is going to be a bit difficult without reading the manual....which is what you could do :)

You could use Flash FXP, or Bulletproof. All you would do would be to set up an FTP server running. Then give the login information to your friends. Then they put the information into a FTP client and then they should be able to connect, unless your Router or Firewall blocks them. Then you can start sharing files with your friends and they can do the same as well.

NATless routers don't exist. NAT is the only way to share Internet connections.

If you want to know I could tell you the ports you need to open for MSN file transfers, but I have an exam to get to. Watch this space.

it is the router... sigh..

A problem with the NAT

look it up in google

"problem NAT msn"

should find stuff.

Either get a new router than is NAT-less OR update msn
