So, no Seaman. Sven said, "We shall re-assess David Seaman's situation after the summer."
Regarding including the injured Rooney he said, "Our doctor is talking to the Everton doctor, but I hope he can travel", "It will be very good for him. Every day he is with the other players bring him into the family even more."
Two surprises (for me) were the inclusion of Upson and Bridge. Neither have done anything spectacular for their club this season. Still no sign of either Barry or La Saux.
So, what are you thoughts on the squad?
If Villa are gonna survive next season then alot of change needs to be implemented... i think you will agree Foreman that theres many issues at Villa park that are far from ideal.
I was very surprised to see that Ian Taylor got released from his contract... that boy has talent in abundance and is a true Villa fan (in much the same way that Di Canio cares about West Ham)
If Graham Taylor dosnt buy 3 seriously quality players in the closed season then Villa will again be in the bottom of the table shake up and may not be so fortunate as they was this season.
It was an 80th minute goal against Sunsderland that effectivcely kept Villa up this year... if they had of drawn 0-0 to Sunderland and then lost (like they did) to Leeds in the final game the Villa would have gone down and not West Ham... thats how close an escape it was for Villa this year...
Much needs to change to avoid a similar scenario in 12 months time.
> True, Rabid.
> Shame to see no Le Saux or Barry, as they are two great defenders.
Barry used to play in defence. But this season Villa have played him on the Left of Midfield where he has scored a few goals, and set up loads with dangerous crosses.
He was also named player of the season for Villa.
Sven must be either blind or dumb by not including him in the squad.
Also glad to see Terry in the squad. If I was the Chelsea manager, I'd see if Terry could play up front, as he seems very dangerous when he comes up for corners, just like Dublin used to be.
Shouldn't of sold him now we need another Centre back....
Seaman has been consistent all year if he retires there should be some sort of tribute to him.
But after helping Leicester back-up to the Premiership with automatic promotion, you can probably say he's earnt this call-up.
...And it's only for a few frendlies, anyway!
It's not like our Euro 2004 qualification is in his hands - like when Zola scored past him at Wembley, several years ago.
I'm also pleased to see Matthew Upson included.
He's had a brilliant season with Birmingham, after finally being given the first-team football he deserves. Fantastic goal-line clearence against West Ham, by the way!
Calling-up Rooney is just stupid - he's got a serious knee-injury, for crying-out-loud! How the heck can you believe he's honestly going to be fit-enough to play in only a few weeks time?!?
He must have some serious problem with Graeme Le Saux, though - he's been one of the most in-formt left-backs throughout the season, even if he's been stuck playing for Chelsea, and not Arsénal or 'United.
He deserves more chances, and shouldn't be frozen-out any longer!
But Middlesbrough seem to have a decent up-and-coming left-footer in their midfeld who could well take the No.11 shirt one-day, after watching play in the 2 FA Youth Cup Final legs.
Chris something, his name is....
Shame to see no Le Saux or Barry, as they are two great defenders. And a few suggestions to fill the weak left flank:
Graeme Le Saux, Gareth Barry, Alan Thompson. Why won't Sven include Thompson? He's a great winger!
Its Arsenals loss that we managed to get Upson so cheaply... he is only 24 and has a great future ahead of him... Blues survival this season was largely down to 3 players (in my opinion) Upson, Dugarrey and Savage... without those 3 signings we wouldnt have finished 13th and im positive about that... all 3 have been outstanding and i cant wait till next season now we have got £15 million to spend on improving an already good squad, and Christophe has signed a 2 year deal (Aliou Cisse will be back for the start of the new season too)
I know he's getting old, but Sven can't possibly pick a lower division goal keeper over Arsenal's number 1.
> Suprised at Bridge? He's the answer to our Left Wing problems...
I would play Barry or La Saux over Bridge. I would play Sinclair on the left out of the list.
