At least we're getting the room warmed up HM :¬) My eyes did register roughly -5.75 and -4.25. Now, this prescription is just 3 yrs old, eyes are now: R -4.75 and L -3.00. I know with my 'sight' it will improve with age but I haven't got 'a lot of age to go' before I 'see' an improvement ;¬)

Indeed we are! Wow, so you are becoming less shortsighted with time, but there is quite a difference between your eyes! I'm sure you have plenty of age to go to enjoy your sight. For the most of us, we just get more shortsighted with time!

@pb, it has been dead. Surprised it has gotten so quiet.
As for power of prescription verses distance of clear focus, it's a simple inverse rule - 1/power = distance in metres (and vice versa). With + prescriptions its the same, but the focus point is behind the eye (hence long sighted).

@DL aha, yeah if you aren't recommended for contacts then its probably good not to go back to them!

Anything you are willing to share I will happily explain to you.

(And sorry for hi-jacking general chat with optician talk :p)

Sometimes Specsavers have a free varifocal offer when you buy a frame over £69. Anything you are willing to share I will happily explain to you.

@pb -5.00 is a reasonable sized prescription - would I be right in saying without lenses you can see clearly at about 20 cms away?

About that, yes. And it's been nice to see the forum busier, so no problems about the hijack!

My eyes are roughly -5.00

Without my glasses or lenses things get fuzzy unless they're close up.

Just found my most recent prescription and it states ...

"Suitable for contact lens assessment: No"

And if it makes any sense, the previous prescription recommended varifocals at £400 but this one doesn't even mention them!

Got lots of 'figures' in boxes, which don't make a lot of sense but maybe they might to you and you can use them to practice online if you like :¬)

Oh right, quite a complex history with your eyes then DL. Yeah, tinted lenses aren't run of the mill and if there are other problems related to not getting back into lenses then that makes sense.

I'm also one that doesn't like a lot of light. Quite happily wandering around in the dark.. Goes to show that I am on the right path to be in a career that works secluded in a dark room all day!

@DL ouch, I think back then the soft lenses were poor at letting the eye breathe and the more modern ones may mean you can wear them again...and.... Some new materials (especially the silicon hydrogels) have a lower water content, so should prevent the dryness - always an option if you ever wanted to go back to them...

Interesting HM, but I don't think I'll go down that road again.

My eyes were susceptible to 'tungsten' light and as such I always had a 10% tint on my glasses ... it isn't any worse now, but I still have trouble with 'bright' lights inside the house! Mrs DL moans that she can't see ... but with them off and just ambient lighting I can see everything clearly and comfortably. Contact lenses with tints isn't an option that I can afford anyway.

You're a -10.00 Alfonse? Crikey... I guess if anything is 10 cm away you'll see it!

I'm a strange one, vertically my eyes are +1.00 and horizontally they are -3.00 giving me a wondrous +1.00/-4.00 x 90 prescription. Without my glasses the world seems very short and fat!
