We took our dog to puppy school when we first got him. Good to get them socialised with other dogs, but it's embarrassing when the rest of the class is doing recall, and your dog is sniffing other dogs and running around. The main things they need to learn are house training (basically number one, but the first few weeks/months, your house gets covered in poo and wee anyway), recall so they come back when they're told making it easier to take them the local park regularly and also making them learn a place where they can always find food and water. The other one is teaching them to walk on the "wall-side" of the pavement, so they're not near the road, and sit is a good one to teach so you can stop them at junctions etc. And if you want a little trick, shake paw is pretty easy to teach.
Don't forget the vet bills, the chewsticks, the dog treats, the bed, the food, the poo bags, the collar, the lead, the dog shampoo, the dog brush, and initially you might want to get some "pee pads" for the house too. And a lot of air freshener until the dog smell becomes a part of the house!
