Both would/could be good.
I said 'post' as the one before mine made me think...!
Having a 'thanks' & 'thanked' option for posts also works well on other forums I use.

This kind of thing is picked up by our Support team pretty sharpish, so focusing on the negative could make people just feel bad about the whole thing. On the other hand, positively marking messages could be a good thing for making people feel happy and like you say:

It could be, but the benefits are few and far between. What about social media, who uses the likes of Twitter, Facebook, Delicious etc? And who actually talks about websites on those sites?
I guess with the positive responses, if used in times of great discussion and points (as opposed to just positively marking everything that makes sense and is on topic), could be a way of flagging GAD-worthy chatting :P
