For the last 24 hours or so I've just been wondering around the house saying 'Wow!' every now and again, simply because I'm stunned at seeing today's technology in action.

I'm not talking about laser-guided missiles or Hubble space telescopes, this is something much less important, and yet amazing in its own right. In fact this thing that is happening as I type is so insignificant that I'm amazed it's a free service. And yet it is. And I can do it whenever I wish. What is it? Well...

24 hours ago I ordered some network cable and a router. In the grand scheme of things this £77.54 order (including VAT and delivery) shouldn't really have a profound effect on me. And yet it does. You see I ordered it over the internet, and every few minutes or so I've been able to keep tabs on EXACTLY what has been happening to my purchase.

At first I watched the vendor's system deduct my order from stock and allocate it. Then a few minutes later I watched the order status change to 'processing payment'. A couple of hours after that I checked on the order again, and it was 'awaiting picking', then 'being picked', then 'being packed', then 'order complete'. An hour or so after this I got an e-mail saying that my parcel had been placed on their van and I could expect it tomorrow.

Amazingly (yes, it gets better), they gave me a ParcelForce tracking number so I could literally watch it move from their warehouse into the National Hub of the Royal Mail. Last time I checked, its status had gone from 'Collected' to 'Arrived at National Hub'. I bet if I stayed up for a few more hours I could track it further to 'In Transit', 'Arrived at Local Hub', 'Being used as a Football during a tea-break', 'Despatched' and, eventually, 'Delivered'.

All that technology, for one ickle parcel, for ickle old me. Is this customer service gone mad or something? I mean, I think it's great that I can track my parcel to such an extent, but isn't it really just a little bit over the top? If they can do this for a parcel, why can't they do it for my neighbour's Ford Escort that got nicked a few days ago?

(Weren't we trying to think of the true source of all evil the other day?)

I can't remember. I remember something about blaming feminists for everything, though.

(That was me, yes. It's better than the money theory.)

Money is... just a reason for greed... why are we talking about this?

(Because maybe Parcel Force is the source of all evil.)

That's probably not true.

(How about sex?)

Sex? Sex being the source of all evil?

(Yes.)

That can't be true.

(Why not? It'd make sense.)

Humanity is the source of all evil... our inability to cope with our selfishness ruins it for the rest of us.

(How about Neil Morrisey? We should blame him for everything then get on with life.)

It's tempting, but no.

That was my cat playing, Sniper. I was playing on the PS2 at the time :P

Setting up my Home Network (never done anything like it before, I'm a complete non-geek when it comes to networking) took me 2 hours. It would have taken 1 hour but technical support at my ISP gave me duff info by saying that my IP address was dynamic when in fact it turns out to be static.

I have a sneaky suspicion that they techie I was put through to used to work for Parcel Force.

*pictures FM shouting at his cat*

This is YOUR fault. Don't you look at me like that. You're the one that said to use two five five for the subnet... yes you did. Up yours then.

Carriage was included in the total price, so free. I just found the parcel, the neighbour 2 doors down signed for it earlier on. So I'm going to be offline for a bit setting up my home network. Ciao for now :)

Of course there is both are as bad as each other and i mean the man in charge of Iraq still.

On another note i don't trust parcelforce i personally prefer secricor and other companies after that incident with the computer.

Parcel Force rock: Their tracking status now says 'Delivered'. Signed for by 'My name'.

Wonder where they delivered it then?

That's rediculous! What's the connection?

Anyway, FedEx tracking, that'w where you get to the good stuff. Enjoyed watching the interesting sounding places my GBA and Gamecube went to on their way from Hong Kong to me. The Gamecube one got messed up when it got to the local delivery people and it allowed to to use The Best Argument Ever TM to them: the package got from Hong Kong to Belfast quicker than it was taking them to get it the last twenty miles up the road to my house.
