Heh, well sort of...

The situation is this:

My third year project for my degree course involves using a genetic algorithm to evolve an AI for playing a particular game called 'Shuttles'. If you know much about genetic algorithms, you'll know running them can be very heavy duty stuff, in computational terms. Being written in Java doesn't help things much, either.

So... due to my PC being somewhat underpowered (600mhz, 256MB SDRAM), and rather prone to spontaneous crashes, it would be extremely helpful if there's anyone here who could help me out at all.

I'm looking ideally for anyone with a high end PC who doesn't mind leaving it running overnight, and preferably isn't likely to use it for anything very strenuous in the near future.

Helping me out would basically involve me emailing you a small program. You'd then just have to run this program, and leave it running in the background until it's done, or for as long as you can otherwise manage.

The more people who can help me out here the better, and I'd be very grateful to anyone who can.

If you think you might be able to help me out, either reply here, or contact me via MSN ([email protected]). Thanks.

It seems that I've stumbled across a recognised 'problem area' of Java. It's not possible to implement correctly without huge amounts of extra code, far beyond the intended scope of my project. Ergo, I won't be attempting to implement them.

The best I can do is set thread priorities to low. Although in theory this should have the intended effect, it is in fact highly unreliable, and produces drastically differing results on different OS's.

I'm going to play around with program parameters for a couple of hours, and then I'll mail you both a copy of the program with a few instructions, and you can run it as you wish.

Turbo, I'm presuming you don't use your hotmail account any more. Do you have another email address?

If you can't optimise for SSE2 my athlon will be faster :D

A race I think!

Turbo, I'm currently looking into getting it to run only during otherwise idle cpu cycles and resumability (by which I mean 'I am waiting for someone on Sun's Java forums to reply to me'). As for K7/MMX/3DNOW optimisations, I have no idea how I'd go about this.

AMD_MAN, that sounds like pretty much exactly what I'm looking for. Do you have an email addy or MSN/ICQ ID that I can contact you at?

I have my P4 running at 2.75ghz 24\7 and only really downloading stuff, also have a P3 550 that never crashes and is never really used (my p4 has SSE2), gimmy a shout if you need me.

2.07ghz AthlonXP good enough for you? 333mhz DDR RAM Cas 2. My PC has large uptime and is usually 94% efficient on tasks like this. However, my mum has a habit of turning it off during the day, so you'd have to make it so I can resume. Could you set it to run with only unused CPU cycles by default?

If you compile with K7/MMX/3DNOW optimisations it'd be good.

But yeah, I'm always up for something new. This morning I got bored of SETI, so right now my spare CPU cycles are discovering my friends' UNIX passwords, heh.
