Yet surely, when one of the couple dies, they are only apart for a while, until the other dies. And then the couple is reunited again.
So when you get married, you're saying that you won't see each other again after death. Which kind of puts the whole existence of heaven into doubt, and bearing in mind that marriage is a religious ceremony...

I don't see it that way, since I'm living on the pricipal that there isn't an afterlife in the first place, it won't be any surprise to me will it?

More than a tiny little bit. But a question for you is, is there a heaven for ants?
I can be as evil and uncaring as I want to in this life, because as you said yourself, people can change, and unless your God is a rash judgemental sonofabitch, then I can change in the afterlife and he can forgive me and send me on my way to paradise.
If it doesn't work that way, then I'll freely renounce your God right now.
God has nothing to do with it.
