Dunno if any of you know but NTL have introduced a 1 gigabyte limit on downloaded data per month...

Seeing as a majority of you probably don't sit there all the time downloading things, you won't be affected but for people who do, they're coming out with all the crap that they've been conned and that they are gonna sue NTL for not giving them 'unlimited' broadband like they quoted...

It's not really a month, I just wanted to worry you! It's actually a-gig-a-day!

People don't realise that they don't have an arguement against this, they can't report NTL to trading standards because it allows them to do it in the contract and it's all legal...

Online gaming too, people seem to be saying that this uses massive amounts of bandwidth and that they can't play anymore because of the limits! I've got a 128k line and not only do I get pings of about 18, if anybody can get near a gigabyte of data a day just by playing games, I'll be surprised...

Quote from some site:

"If you are on a 12 month contract
They can't hold you to contract, they have moved the goal posts!
They advertised it as "unlimited" and this is clearly a limit and an unreasonable one at that."

Basically they were saying that NTL could change their contracts, so could we by not paying!

Also, most people on their little forums seem to believe that reporting NTL to trading standards is gonna help because they have broken advertsing laws...

Funny how the person on the site has changed all of what they said yesterday after receiving many complaints telling him that he was completely wrong! Boasting that he had complained to all the authorities about how NTL broke the contract and how they were falsely advertising...

He's changed it all now after realising how much of a prat he was making out of himself!

1 gigabyte a day is an awfully high amount of data to be downloading, EVERY DAY! People say that they have to upgrade Linux which is often 1.5 gig at a time, are they trying to say that this happens every day?

Also, wouldn't your PC fill up after a while if you were downloading updates to software all the time? You can't burn the updates to a disk, maybe the download files...

I've got no problem with what they are doing, BT have already done it by limiting their service and BTGenie also limited their 'unlimited free text' service to 300 a month...

Still though, people continue to complain, it was offered as a 'residential' service when they got it and by continuously downloading, they weren't acting as it was stated in the terms and conditions and limits had to be introduced because people were abusing the service...

All 'unlimited' packages have catches, Freeola's catch in the T&C is that bandwidth is unlimited until it starts to have a dramatic effect on the speed of the server and other people's sites...

Finally, when people are told of the miseries of living in Australia and how they have crappy limits, these people start swearing and being offensive to them because the Aussies should 'stand up for themselves!'

'If people abuse the service, the service abuses them'

They're thinking of changing the limits...

There's a forum that I'm posting on, most of my posts get deleted because the owner is trying to stir up as much **** as they can by any means!

From reading this people believe that:

NTL have broken contracts and they can sue them/send them to the advertising people for false advertising...

By downloading as much stuff as possible that tehy are gonna ruin the service and make NTL change it for them...

Mass cancellations are organised for tomorrow! Yes, they think that by all leaving NTL will crash and burn! Shame that there's only about 20 people gonna do it!

I'm trying to give people the right idea on there that they can be angry but their plans are complete crap, unfortunatly, the posts I make telling people what's happening gets deleted!

Still, must inform the public!

Forget that my mistake, its BT Broadband who impose the 1GB limit and have done since the start. BTO is different to BT Broadband. On another note I read that a poll to BTO users suggest 30% want a 1GB limit.

I am sure every ADSL company in time will impose a limit as there are some people who probably use there connection 24/7 at full speed. I do use my ADSL alot but not as much as I did when I first got it. I think for the first few weeks every ADSL/Cable user must go on a download frenzy just because they can get so much. Hopefully ADSL/Cable usage will come down to a reasonable level per user and no such Cap will come in to effect. Some days you may only browse the web and check email using up very little that day, but the next you may need to get 3GB. So I think it would be better to have the flexiability. Te only way forward is to punish the frequent abusers who constantly download 24/7 at full speed.

I would agree with this as well.

To Tom I think that BT Openworld do have a 1GB a day limit. They have done ever since it was annouced as a service. Try looking at the AUP for BTO and I am sure you will read that they do impose a 1GB a day limit. This is one of the reasons why I didnt go with them.

What about scaling the limits to what people could achieve in 12 hours?

128k - 675mb (maybe an exception for this one)
600k - 3gb
1mbit - 5gb

It's still nothing like fair, but better.

Yup, check the nthellworld forums, so many people downgrading their service, I can see this one backfiring heavily..I'm still on 1mbit for now, see what happens first, btu could see myself moving down in the not-to-distant future.

As for the stat, fair enough, 'tis just what I read somewhere or other..can't remember where now I come to think of it. Damn my memory.

Thoughts on a 2 tiered policy? Say, £25/month 600k capped at 1gb, £30 for 600k with no limit? Just pondering the subject, NTL really don't have many options open to them.

Heh. At least my BT Openworld broadband connection has no limits at the moment. Although I can see it happening in the future.

It's not the fact that I download more that 1gb every day, it's the fact that you're paying for unlimited access, but you're being limited. A great example was the processor mentioned by someone here.

Xbox Live doesnt use that much. If your playing a game someone else is hosting then your probably going to be downloading 5 - 10k a second, less than that. I have my Xbox Live running through ICS so I can actually look at what data is actually being transfered over the internet. If you host a game then yes you do use more bandwidth and can use alot of download rate. Upload rate is more when hosting though, but this isnt covered in the limit.

Be thankful that you dont live in Australia, they have 3GB limit per MONTH. And then they either pay per gig or get there speeds capped to 56K type speeds.

1GB a day is ok if your running 128K as you can download at 16k/s and reach about 57mb in a hour at full speed. Your talking 18 hours a day to reach 1GB for a 128K user at full speed. So no matter what its unlikly they will use more than 1GB a day unless they have the PC on 24/7 downloading.

For the 600K users 1Gb comes through fast and the same as 1mb. Its unreasonable to limit these users to 1GB when on 1mb connection this figure could be acheived in 2 and a half hours. Who would pay extra for a 1mb when they can pay less for a 600K or even go down to a 128K. The 128K is fine for games as the ping is still low like the 600K and 1mb connections, and games dont need to send much data.

I also read on a website that NTL customers average just 100mb a day. So why the need for this limit in the first place? If its just a few abusers that use there 1mb connection at full speed 24/7 then something should be done to them and not everyone.

I can see lots of people ditching the 1mb and going for the cheaper 600K or even cheaper 128K, or even ditching NTL and going with ADSL or another cable company.

From what I've heard, they're going to introduce it more on a monthly scheme, so if you persistently exceed say 30gb of download per month, then you will be capped.

1gb a day might seem a harsh amount of data, but who needs to download more than 30gb a month, unless you're downloading movies for vcd and pirating them on?
