How cheap can stand alone PSU's be?
I'll have to look around cos the PSU fan atm is about to die.... would save the other components in the pc aswell sicne they are still working if i replaced it, cos i think there's a pc guru when i go round a family mates house that could fit it for me...

I am so lucky its still working i think the Power supply itself is still functionable but the fan is having trouble

Capacitors store charge in the PSU so there's a ready supply at all times. It keeps the rails steady. Seeing as you're not supposed to even see them, they don't mind being uninsulated.
Last guy I knew who touched one was blown 5 feet against a wall.
Of course you can always leave them to discharge (unplug the PSU from the mains for 5 hours), or discharge them by hooking up a think wire to the earth then touching them with the wire.
Just don't earth it to the gas mains :D

Sinpes, iirc my Macron 400w cost £40-50, can't remember exactly. However, why don't you just open up the PSU and put in a fan of your own? They all have standard 80mm fans. Things to look out for:
1. DON'T TOUCH THE CAPACITORS. These are the cyclinders that look mean near the back of the PSU, These could kill you.
2. You'll need to cut the wires of the old fan and the new fan, then solder them together, as you won't have the right connectors.
2 hours of your time and a good health insurance plan and you're laughing mate! S'what Im gonna do.
