Considering many HD ready TVs can display 1080i pictures it doesn't surprise me that there's not much difference (if any).

Not sure about this one guys.I have hooked my Panasonic Blu Ray Player with output set to 1080p to my Panasonic Plasma TV.I tried it with 3 different HDMI leads :

1. An official Oppo lead which came with my superb Oppo 981HD upscaling DVD player. These are truly brilliant DVD players. They display some DVD's so well it makes you wonder why you bother with Blu Ray.

2 A £40 Vivanco lead (oxygen free etc.)

3 .A £2.45 Plexus lead from Ebuyer.

Tested it on the US Blu Ray disc of 'Kung Fu Panda',which is the best BR disc I've seen (picture quality wise) and noticed no difference between the 3 leads whatsoever !.The picture was incredible using all 3.The Vivanco lead is very pretty though but its hidden behind the back my TV !.

Another myth is the big difference between HD and Full HD panels (720p and 1080p).Unless you have a 50'' screen and watch nothing but Blu Ray's from 2 feet away, the difference is hardly noticeable.I've seen 720p & 768p panels (Pioneer and Panasonic's) which nail many 1080p full HD sets for picture quality IMO.

Just my observations,not technological facts.

Its the same with Optical cables. I've seen the same sized ones in Currys for £17 as in more specialist shops for £30 and online for £6

Both Optical and HDMI cables vary greatly in quality depending on how good their materials and manufacture are, so do be careful about buying them cheap.

Hannard made a shopping tips thread, thought I'd link it here as there are some good tips we could all use:

Buying tips

Cheers Hannard

- the tip about cables is true. Not meant to be negative about the company you work for, but there are high speed HDMI cables in game for £30, whereas I've seen them for about half that price...do shop about!

Get enough points for a £30 sendit voucher on iPoints if you sign up to Foxy Bingo and deposit and wager £10. So that's £30 to spend from using just £10!

Of course, you might actually win a game of bingo as well and get your money back too.
