There are many arguements for and against the events of the Bible really taking place. The last programme on part of the subject (Moses) was really interesting.
History, any kind, whether it be from the Bible or otherwise, is written by the victors and each author has their own historical slant. To understand the Bible (either as a work of fiction or fact) you have to go back to the time and understand who wrote it, for what purpose and under what conditions.
Yes, there are a lot of social elements that find their way into both books, the Apocrypha texts are probably the least watered down and most 'accurate' of any and worth reading to fill in the gaps.

Old testament - early human - equivilant of a baby.
Is taught by raw reward and punishment.
Shouted at when something is done wrong, smiled upon/given a cookie when something is done right.
New testament - human has grown - equivilant of child.
Still needs rules, to be told what's right or wrong, but doesn't need the raw reward/punishment system as much. They have to learn to do something because it's right, not because they'll get punished.
Modern day - after struggling through a confused adolescence (Spannish Inquisition torture and Catholics and Prodestants killing each other over how to worship the Lord wasn't exactly what he had in mind for his Kingdom on Earth...), human has become an adult, and should know what's right and wrong rather than try to bend and quote the simplistic rules they were taught as kids (that's why it's so stupid, sometimes, when people try to quote the bible rather than understand it!).
God's nurtured us through our childhood and we've now grown independant.
Ofcourse, we can still call on him if we need help, but I'd like to think that we can atleast TRY to look after ourselves nowdays...
And good for them.

Yes he was, and is.

No it wasn't you imbecile. Even if you have no faith in God you must understand that it is a great historical reference ?

Pfffttt....

Like what exactly?
