Before I start I ought to say that I know very very little about computers.

I've had a problem with my modem for about a week now.

When I try to connect to my ISP (which is a dial up to the university), I get the tone dialing noise, then the (sounds like an old speecy loading screen) conecting noise, but I can never get any further than this. Eventually the computer gives up and says something like 'Could not connect to the remote computer'.

I don't think its a problem with the ISP, because I also have UKOnline and exactly the same thing happens when I try to dial up to that.

i don't think any of my settings for the dial up connection are wrong because I haven't ever had a problem dialing up before and I haven't changed anything.

The last time that I did manage to connect to the internet I did get some banging noises coming from inside the CPU, which has happened once before to no ill effect.

The last thing that I used the internet for was to download an update for Nortan Systemworks.

What I really want to know is where do think the problem is comping from. The Hardware, the software, the ISP, or the phone company?

Um. I always forget, I think it was something about the remote computer not responding.

Thanks for you help btw.

Gah, My ISP is the University where I work. The IT department here REALLY sucks :(

If its the modem thats at fault I could just ring the Company I bought the computer off couldn't I. Its still under guarentee because its only 5 months old.

The dialup noises is the modem shaking hands with the computer at the other end - "Hello, I'm a modem!" "Really?!" "Yes, I'm 56K and I have the following parameters!" "Ohh, excellent".

Except yours isn't excellent. For some reason the connection is not being established. It could be one of many settings on the modem, but if you haven't changed anything, it made funny noises and now it isn't working, the logical conclusion is that it's in some way broken.

You could try phoning one of your ISPs - the engineers are able to sit and watch exactly what happens when your computer dials theirs. They may be able to tell you straight away what the problem is.

I was online, It didn't disconnect, in fact nothing happened at all. The banging stopped and I thought nothing more of it, until the next day when I couldn't get online. If its a hardware problem then thats good as all the hardware is still under guarentee. But if the modem was 'boogered', then would it make all the correct dial up noises?

Hrm, tricky.

"Banging noises" are never good. What were you doing when it made the noises? Were you online at the time? Did it disconnect?

Sounds like your modem is boogered tbh
