I've had a problem with my modem for about a week now.
When I try to connect to my ISP (which is a dial up to the university), I get the tone dialing noise, then the (sounds like an old speecy loading screen) conecting noise, but I can never get any further than this. Eventually the computer gives up and says something like 'Could not connect to the remote computer'.
I don't think its a problem with the ISP, because I also have UKOnline and exactly the same thing happens when I try to dial up to that.
i don't think any of my settings for the dial up connection are wrong because I haven't ever had a problem dialing up before and I haven't changed anything.
The last time that I did manage to connect to the internet I did get some banging noises coming from inside the CPU, which has happened once before to no ill effect.
The last thing that I used the internet for was to download an update for Nortan Systemworks.
What I really want to know is where do think the problem is comping from. The Hardware, the software, the ISP, or the phone company?

Ahh now thats a though. I might look into this one. Would deleting my connections and setting them up again work?

good idea I might try another ISP. The phone is fine, I've had incoming and outgoing calls okay. i also rang the ISp numbers from the phone and got a computer noise, so thats as it should be. The noise was a quite rhytmic banging, like something was rotating and banging on somethimg else.
Oh BT doesn't cover my Area, so not mush point in ringing them.
Something you could try is visiting the support site of your isp and following the instructions on there. If you visit www.ukonline.co.uk, goto support, select your connection type, select connecting from the menu, select the version of windows you have from the drop down list and then select Checking Connection Settings from the menu and try following the instructions, you might find you have something like software compression checked when you shouldn't. Worth a look anyway before launching into trying to get BT to check your line or getting your computer looked at by the manufacturer.

But I have two ISPs and they are both doing the same thing, One is the University I work at, athough a friend has mentioned she is having a similar problem.
