I've just been reading though http://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp
and it's some pretty interesting stuff.

I also did the test they have there, "17 of 20", not a bad start.

I'm certainly going to try and make a little Web Page/Site using only CSS and no tables, just to see how I go, but it doesn't look as difficult as I first believe it would be.

Don't know about books, but the (small) amount of CSS I've picked up this week has come from a couple of online tutorials:

hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/authoring/ stylesheets/tutorials/tutorial1.html

and

http://www.w3.org/MarkUp/Guide/Style

And a reference thing, the link to which I've misplaced. Incidentally the second of those tutorials has a link to the author's homepage, which demonstrates that the best coders aren't always the best designers :P

I'm going to have to learn more about this stuff, sounds pretty impressive, and the examples you showed look as good as any other site.

I don't suppose you could recommend any CSS books could you?

Yes, yes and yes, and I forgot to mention that with Div, youhave the z-index allowing you to stack them too, so unlike tables, you can overlay content!

Firstly.. I recognise that design from somewhere, and as we speak, I have someone researching it for me now.

Secondly, it's still crap! Your meant to be teaching the basics of Website production, I won't say "Design" and to be quite honest, it ain't.

If you knew as much as your site recons...

a) It wouldn't be built in FrontPage
b) You wouldn't be using as these are depricated in HTML4 & xHTML
c) You would be using CSS instead of the above and would have spent at least some time sorting your typography out.

Finally, back to the "design" or in this case, "lack of"... where's the consistency, the thought to type and layout, struture etc etc. I can't help but think that all this site is, is a ripped shell, with ripped content. Nice attempt, but unfortunatley for you, a lot of us here do actually know what were looking at and what were doing, and I personally find this site amusing as the best way to teach is by example, and this is definately a bad one...

BTW:

1. should be

2. There is no such thing as a "command" in HTML it's a text formatting code, a cut down version of SGML, all it does it format and control the layout of text using predefined tags, "it commands" nothing

3. You going to tech Javascript I see... Though oddly enough your using:
//Encrypted Password script- By Rob Heslop
//Script featured on Dynamic Drive
//Visit http://www.dynamicdrive.com
This could be interesting!

4. Going on the above, there is no way I beleive that you designed the lookand feel of this site! I recognise those menu designs, and when it finally comes to e, I'll tell you where I think you got them from.

When you put it like that, it doesn't sound all that hard.

Are you able to use % as well?? Like 20% of the screen for this, 30% for that, etc ... like you can with tables now???

Short answer... yes!

you can position DIV's using CSS anywhere you want. Relative to it's neighbour, the one above it, the one below it, from the exact positioning by pixel, the possibilities are quite impressive once you pick it up...

Only one small draw back... It's technically CSS2 % CSS3, so kiss all those old browsers goodbye!

OK, I get it now - absolute position DIVs with content inside. It can work, but you may lose some of the benefits that tables hold. Can you position DIVs reletive to the bottom or right-hand side of another DIV?
