...by gettinga job in retail. I don't know where yet, but my financial situation has reached its ...ahem, 'apex', so I'm an need of cash, and have decided to get a job, probably as a shop assistant or something. I know the work is going to be brainless and boredom-inducing, but it has become a necessity.

I hate most people that are shop assistants - most of them are unhelpful, rude prats (no offence to any here, hence the word 'most'), and now I'm probably going to end up one of them. Last week I was in Superdrug. It was a busy Saturday, the queue was reaching Great Wall of China-like proportions, and I had about 50p Pix 'n' Mix.

The guy goes "I need to get this weighed".

"It costs 46p, I weighed it", I replied.

"Yeah, but I still have to weigh it", he squeaked back.

But because the queue was so long, he had to go and ring the bell. About 7 minutes later, with the queue of disgruntled customers growing ever longer, some wisecrack came strolling up, laughing and joking with other staff members.

"Here, what can I do?" he asks, smirking.

"Weigh this", the useless one goes.

Time im queue now appraoching 15 mins. He goes off to weigh it, comes back and whispers in the till assistants ear.

"So how much was it then?", I ask, seriously annoyed by now. His answer?

"46p".

That's what I've got to look forward to...

"Do you want five years peace of mind with that telly?"

"What's that?"

"Warranty, buy one, buy one now! Arrghhh!"

Ha, thats okay because most of them probably hate you.

And any manners we have are quickly sucked away by the fact that 90% of people are far more rude and ignorant, but a lucky 10% do get manners with their service.

Plus, when your manager is desperately trying to break the amount of money the store can take in an hour, and says he'll buy a pile of sweets for the staffroom if we break it, then who cares about manners - just get people served, get the money, and repeat... :P

You see, I think this is the common mistake when people moan about shop assistants. People think we actually care, when the reality is that most of us (of my age anyway) think Clerks is the ideal staff training video...he he :)

I know, I'd be so much better off if I'd never started working there ! Plus I've only watched about 3/4 of them.

Same here, my DVD collection boomed the moment I started working, 258 and going strong...

This is where I've made a mistake. Y'see first Xmas I was there the person in charge of me was off for ages, and another got sacked, so I was left by myself on this one department and, knowing I was stuck there (it was my gap year) for a while, actually made a good job of it. Hence, after having been there 4 weeks, I was able to refund stuff, open tills, e.t.c. and had to sort out problems.

Lesson #2 Do your job, but not too well... but then again I now have a job where I get paid a bit more, and never have to go on the tills again until January. Bonus. :)

Heh. Yes, i've cheapened myself to the likes of a job in safeway and cheap hotel scrubber, as well as the odd shift behind a bar.
Why? To put myself through uni in a way consistant with being able to buy food and still get a night out every week or two.

Actually, full time in the summer money's not really been a problem at all. Financed a cube, minidisk, and now an imported Q.

Belldandy's advice is sound stuff though. Screw the lot of 'em.
Do you're job with the effort you're willing to put in. If there's a remotely serious problem with anything (including a big queue at the till in front of you) it's your boss's problem. You're on a crap enough wage, so let them earn their company car.
But you're doing the best you can/will do and it's not enough for your bosses, they fire you or you quit. If you want to keep the job, try harder. If not, go. Your choice, and if you're not good enough for it to be your choice whether you meet their standards you're in the wrong job anyway.
Might feel more complicated when there are bills to be paid, but i think the principles still stand true.

Maybe the best actual advice i could give would be find the least crap jobs and try to be good at them.
Thus at safeway petrol station - good on the till, usually the boss sends someone else round to pick up litter and changing the gloves and bin bags at the pumps.
I was a demon with the till. And i covered my mistakes well :^)

I did a stint in an electrical retailers and if anyone gave me grief I'd simply turn my back on them and walk off. I'd hear them screaming for the manager as I nonchantly strolled away.

How I lasted for 6 months is beyond me.
