And it's even better as a Directors Cut. Just like Blade Runner was. Some great additional scenes, like Galadriel giving her gifts in Lorien, the Elves passing into the West, Boromir and Aragorn arguing and Biblo rambling about hobbits. All in all, it's exactly what I thought it was going to be - closer to the book and an altogether better film. Still my favourite film, by the way.

Thats all.

Basically, what version you prefer depends on how faithful you want the film to be to the books (in terms of detail).

I'm thinking of buying and watching the extended version, but I might have to take a year out first.

I'm not going to debate LotR. I respect everyones opinion, except in this case where Grix is clearly wrong :)

Nope, you're just paying the extra 15 quid for the bookends. Which is extremely annoying considering it always said stuff like "as well as extra goodies" on sites selling the box set.

OH COME ON!! Surely you'd care if Aragorn died!

And you must have cared when Bean died! If you didn't, then there is something seriously wrong with you.

"Men bearing gifts"

Ho ho ho.

I don't think so. I read it with an N in first time through. Then I re-read it as I was puzzled as to how the hell it got past the filters.

Anyway, I got my 4-disc set complete with bookends yesterday. I haven't watched any of it yet though, and I am unlikely to watch it tonight as I should be going to see Red Dragon. Took me a while but I'll finally see it. Red Dragon that is, not Lord of the Rings.

I enjoyed it, but I still think the characters were just too flat...

I go by a very important rule: If someone dies, would you care?

To be honest, if they all got brutally murdered on screen in the next one I don't think I'd care at all. Tbat's where my problem lies. I want to watch a film/read a book/play a game and get involved, want to feel for them. Otherwise it's boring for me.

Note use of 'for me'.

I agree. If you really liked the film, and you're one of the people who has read the books, then you need this new edition. Like Styke says, the extra scenes make this a new film - it's that good. Haven't watched the extras yet but I will.

I got the August version, and the extras are completely different. They're ordered into From Book to Vision on the 1st disc, and from Vision To Reality on the 2nd disc. It's the most comprehensive extras package I've ever seen, with every stage of the process filmed and documented, including research on Tolkein's true intentions. Peter Jackson loves DVD, fortunately :) But the real reason to get this is the new 30 mins. It transforms the film, really. Directors cut or whatever Jackson wants to call it (he thinks the word directors cut means the theatrical version wasn't good enough), it's better. So I'd say get it, but you'd have to be a great fan of the film.
