40% may seem high, but considering they'll probably only get half that (if anything), then it's fair play. They always say you should ask for double what you actually want!
I appreciate that a strike may put lives at risk, but that's something held over them by government - and if they don't strike, they'll continue getting screwed.

they are good people and not the evil honourless muppets that insane bartender makes them out to be
(seems I missed out on most of the arguing today)
Ooh sorry mr traveller today you can't catch your flight today as it seems some airport staff are striking today.
If your a politician you don't need to strike to get an inflation busting rise you can just get a panel to give it to you.
Best of all the managing director of some huge company will get a nice wage then when the board fire them for incompetence they get a nice big cheque for fouling up.
The only reason they are striking now is because the high profile case of the tube strikers and the disclosure of how much they get and how much they want.
Who said that any muppet can be a fire fighter
they don't just put out little fires and rescue cats from trees
they have to be trained to deal with hazardous chemical spills, gas leaks, multi vehicle car crashes, and other nasty stuff.
So if you ever had the misfortune to be in a situation where you were to be requiring the services of the fire service, who would you prefer to be saving your behind?
A bunch of "muppets" (as you would describe them) who has finnished a shift on their second jobs turning up,
or would you prefer a fully trained team of fire fighters and would put themselves in dangerous situations to save you?
So they have no sense of honour do they? well then you must have a pretty twisted sense of honour then.

Ok, so we pay all the public service workers 40% more. Taxes rise by 10% to pay for it. Inflation goes ballistic. Companies go bust. The country hits a recession. Unemployment hits the roof. The Government borrows billions to cover the gap. The Chinese take advantage of the situation and buy all our companies on the cheap. There is civil unrest, nobody can accept the epidemic of starvation. The mob rules. Civilisation as we know it breaks down.
I wonder if you are even aware of just how good a Fireman's pension is? Paid for by you, all of you, whatever your age, in the future.
We already don't make anything we use in this country. Why make matters worse?

I don't know why people find such things disturbing to be honest. Maybe they're too busy thinking "what if that was me". I don't work that way.
£30k for doing what they do? I wouldn't be first in the queue, but only because there are people who can run faster than me.

*******
So you think you could handle pulling the body of a dead child that is so badly burned you can hardly recognise(sp) them from their house?
(Worst case scenario of course)

Not all office jobs have stress. Programming certainly doesn't. I know, I've done it.

True enough, some people can't handle gore. I'm not among them. Bring on disembodied limbs and burning faces.

You know nothing about me, what I have to do, what I have to deal with, and what I have to accept. You know nothing. I'd rather set myself aflame than live another day as I do, I live on only because of my concern for others.
How many firemen live the kind of continuous sacrifice that is my life I cannot say, but I doubt there are many of them.
If I could get away with doing their workload for the same money I earn now, I wouldn't have to think twice.
Read the rest of the thread - no-one is denying that teachers and the rest (police, nurses, doctors etc.) deserve more money, but this topic was about the firefighters specifically, because they were considering strike action.
And I also take this opportunity to apologise to Bartender for the comments at the end of the previous post. Today was not a good day, and I was in a foul mood - there was no call for the comments, and I respect his opinions, even though I don't agree with them.
