id Software have revealed details on the multi-player options for upcoming classic, Doom III - the co-operative mode's been killed!

Speaking in a recent interview, id Software designer Tim Willits revealed some juicy details about the multi-player modes in the forthcoming PC behemoth, Doom III. Up until now, no details had been announced on the multi-player facets of the game, leading many people to believe that the game was going to be single-player only. Fret not, you'll still be able to play with friends, but you may be a little disappointed at some of the details Willits has announced.

Asked whether Doom III had any multi-player content, Willits responded: "Yes, there will be basic multi-player. We won't have any breaking ground with this, it;s fully scalable. John [Carmack] said yesterday that it's just going to be four player but it really depends on the maps we make and the multi-player style we develop. But we are still a long way from that, we've really been working on the single-player mode of the game." Hmm, so far not too bad - Doom III was widely expected to be primarily a single-player experience, so it's not too much of a shocker.

Now the kick in the pants. "We won't have co-operative play, that's definite. Once we get further into the multi-player aspect we will explore voiceover IP options, but for now we don't have any plans for it. All we know is that it is gonna have deathmatch, primarily because we are really structured in the single-player experience, and that's what we're really focusing on." So, the co-op mode has been canned - but is this such a great loss?

id Software have not only single-handedly invented the first-person shooter, but they continue to re-invent it with every new game they produce. The latest Quake game, Quake 3 Arena was designed solely for multi-players, and contained almost no single-player frills. Doom III on the other hand, is the opposite - almost entirely dedicated to a spine-chilling single-player experience. But which do you prefer? Are first-person shooters meant to be enjoyed by a multitude of people, or are they meant for the single player - one man against the world, as it were?

I'd like to know your views on this question - are first-person shooters better suited to multi-player modes or not? Can more enjoyment be gained from playing them solo?

In a way, Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast is a 1st person shooter, and I much prefer the single player mode.

However, Tactical Ops is definitely for multi-player. In fact, there really is no single player mode. UT 2003 does have a single player mode, but no real plot.

I'd like to point out Deus Ex here - an awesome single player game that never needed a multiplayer to be one of the best games ever. If games like this can be produced all the time, then I see no reason why FPS' shouldn't be great for both single and multiplayer.

Doom III doesn't have a co-operative playing function.

But it will have a patch or two...

I couldn't really care if the game with multiplayer support or not, just so long as there is enough done to the single player game to make it enjoyable to play.

Deus Ex was indeed a Specter title. (Sounds like something from Thunderbirds...)

Carmack thought he was the God of the FPS. Only Daikatana proved him wrong...

Personaly I am very happy even surprised to hear that a game of this level and quality is being released with the emphasis not on multiplayer like almost everything elese being released these days, but insted on the single player it's well how can I put it YAHOOOOO YAAAAAAA ALRIGHT!!
I guess I am a little older then most game players out there but I still enjoy a good quality shooter as much as anyone ,maybe even a bit more. What I mean is I am working most of the time I design Printed Circuit Boards for a living and its a very high preasure and quite often very long hours. My point being that there are times when I just need to jump into a good game after getting home and start blowing things away! Its one great way to release tention and bloe off some steam,"BEATS KICKING THE DOG" by a long shot. Why single player? I just dont have the time or quite frankly the energy to get online and onto a server and well etc. etc. you get the point I think. And I am not the only old gamer out hear that feels this way I hear it quite a lot when ever fellow gamers gather around and swap tales about each others favorit games. It seems that I am not alone when I pass on buying a new release or a totaly new game for that matter that is multi-player only I just dont buy it period. And one more thing while I am on this subject the second most influential issue seems to be cheat codes again we just dont have the time to play over and over gaining experiance etc. etc.!! Its a release we want GOD Mode and all weapons and unlimited ammo. Realy these are the main issues I find and also now agree with I know other players that look for cheats when a new game comes out with single player option of course and if they are not available they just dont buy the game! My wife dose not get it eather LOL she just dose not understand how I can work on computers all day and then come home and jump right back on one? Only to start shooting and blowing things up for a half an hour or so .What can I say when I get up to go eat I pet my dog as I let out a long breath as the tension from the day seems to lift from me and all I can say is "HEY THATS ENTERTAINMENT".

Thanks for lending me your ear.
