I picked up my PC in 1998, and I've been playing the UT demo over the internet with no problems whatsoever... Admitadly Ive not maxed the graphics, but the graphics are of a higher spec that the PS2 is able to throw out (1024x786 res, all settings to high)?
I think its just one of those myths that continually seems to churn over and over in the forum, this along with... having to spend 1000-2000 pounds every year before you can play current games seems to be the most popular PC quotes, along with PS2 is oudated, outmoded, and only produces sequals, GC is a childrens machine, etc...
Leaving out the financial side of this, I prefer my consoles for gaming now because I know with certainty that I can buy any game for them, take it home, put it in the disc tray, and play it, and it'll work fine. No drivers, no blue screens, version conflicts, intermittent patches, add ons e.t.c Plug and play all the way, the thing Microsoft have promised for the PC since Windows 95. To play GTA3 well on a PC requires a PC that costs nearly £1000 +, my PS2 does it quite well for £169.99 thank you very much, plus it won't crash.
Developers for the PC never concentrate on getting the most out of hardware unlike console developers who do, they just up the specs you need which sucks, same goes for bug testing. Major new release going to be delayed by bugs ? Don't worry, release the patch in a month !!
And lastly, PC games might be cheaper but they're nearly impossible to trade in in shops and you only get a small fraction of the price back selling on Ebay, mostly. Whereas console games retain quite a high trade in price for a month or so at least. Last week I traded in ICO on PS2 whihc cost me £34.99, and got £26 back against another game.
Sure, everyone likes different stuff, but I won't be buying any more PC games !

Would that last you 5 years though? I paid around that for my PC 2 years ago, and could only play the latest games. Within a year it was obselete. Mind you, I didn't buy it with gaming in mind, just for internet and word processing stuff...

well... 599... so, closer to 4x the price... Also, given that PC games are 10-15 quid cheaper per title, it pretty much kills off any/all price difference? (excluding GC emulation)

Which is the most obvious, and most important point?
Anyway, look at it on a financial level.
Buying a Gamecube will allow you to play the latest Nintendo games, and games for at least 5 years. That's £130.
Buying a PC that will allow you to play games for 5 years will cost you 10 times that.
So I'm happy playing what I percieve as better games, on a lower cost system.
