Covering the same point again.. I run the latest games, at a 1024x768 res on my 1998 PC?
MS has released an upgrade to Windows XP. Service pack1 is now available, but XP has not been around very long and they are on the upgrade path already. Some may say it's to correct problems. But if this is the case, why didn't MS get it right in the first place.

that isnt necassarily (spelt wrong) true, ive had the same pc since 1996 but ive upgraded it many time in total ive spent about 200 quid and its as fast as pentium 4, if not better
On top of that, you'll have to continue to upgrade every 24 months with a new sound/gfx card, because even the latest Geforce 4 gfx cards will be nearly obsolete by then.
It's true that these games running on these kinds of systems are going to kick all console games into touch in terms of graphical power, but for some people (like me), installing and configuring a PC game to get it running 'just right' is just too much trouble, plus there's the added problem of having to learn 2398320348390432 hot keys and keyboard commands for each game.
The one advantage that consoles have always had is their ability to just pop in a disc and play, knowing that you're getting the most out of your game from the word go. (N64 Expansion Paks being an exception to the rule). You also know that a console is going to last you a good 5-7 years from the day you bought it, you also know that if you stick to a particular brand of console from generation to generation that you are going to continue to get updates of games that you enjoy playing.
So I'd say PC's do provide the best in gaming, as long as you're prepared to pay through the nose for the privilege of being able to play the latest titles at their optimum settings.
Consoles do the same job, but sacrifice a small amount (we ARE talking small amount these days) of graphical power. But then the potential savings are immense.

No body is saying that the GC, X-Box, PS2, etc.. arn't fantastic machines... Nobody is saying that they arnt spectacularly fun to play games on... Consoles are made for playing games, and are damn good at it too... I don't think anyone was attacking consoles specifically... so its okay, no need to hyperventalate... Like I say, if you enjoy your console, it should'nt really bother you that much what anyone else thinks, vive la difference! ;)

Not at all... I picked up my machine in 1998, I happily play modern games (e.g. GTA3, Morrowwind, Spiderman) at a minimum res of 1024x768 and minimum settings of high (though I generally try for giher settings)
I have upgraded my PC memory, twice, but since it was £13 for 128MB both times (cheaper than memory cards?) I don't see it as a problem...
I have a machine I bought several years before the PS2 was launched, that is capible of playing titles to a superior specification to the PS2 today?

At £15-20 price difference per title, you don't have to be a serious games player to benifit from the price difference?
PC games do cost less - but i don't believe this is enough to make up for the extra cost of the hardware.

a 2.X gig PCs are around 599?

The PC also has GTA3 (and GTA4)... I don't think anyone was saying that the GC doesnt have good titles (except possibly PS2 and X-Box owners)... at the end of the day, if your happy with your system, what does it matter what other people think?
