Don't say stupid things like "it's brilliant" give me true reasons of why you think it's popular.
If normal music is soothing and uplifting then what would you think songs that are done by people who can't even speak more than one word at a time, like Marylin Manson, SlipNot, Sum41 and all those other Modern rock groups, why are they so popular since they are not soothing and uplifting?
They add something, another angle to the song.
I object to the "See Britney Dance! Dance Britney Dance!" sort of video, pure self-flattery with no artistic merit or attempt to do anything other than distract you from tedious and mediocre singers.
I meant videos. How many people watch the videos and say "I like that song", yet never go out and buy it?
"artists" like Britney Spears, Shakira etc exists purely because of videos. "Hit me baby" didn't get high in the chart because it's a good song.
It was the outfit in the video.
It's not about music anymore, it's about playing to base-instinct in leching men or pubescent teen girls. Look at videos that try and be something else. Tool - abstract images, emotions and feelings. Not the band in jumpsuits in front of collapsing buildings.
Then compare to a Hype Williams video, that Busta Rhymes/Janet Jackson duet. Video was good, can you remember the song or how it went?
Just a distraction from the music, to divert attention from a mediocre song and push it into the public conscience by using images instead of the music.
> It's not though.
I didn't realise you meant videos. I was talking about production. Sometimes a really good production job can be as good as good musicicans playing. Take Snake River Conspiracy or Garbage. Both bands made up of a Producer and a female front. SRC especially don't have songs that would work well without fantasic production.
If you have to use a video, I want the band performing in a warehouse.
No fancy dance-routines, no explosions, no CGI.
I want musicians doing what musicians do.
Anything else is making up for the fact it's a shoddy song.
Unless it's genuine art, like Tool videos.
Not just a moving ego-fluff piece.
> Music isn't there to be seen with a budget
I dunno about that.
Wheras music lifts the soul, conjures images and can affect.
Which is why I'm saddened that thanks to eMpTyV etc, most people's primary sensory input for music is a video.
Music isn't there to be seen with a budget etc, it's supposed to be about personal interpretation and *taps head* this.
