I don't really think you can call the biggest global game on Earth a "fad", seeing as it's also been around for donkey's years.
A fad is something like Pokemon, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Power Rangers, something that is hyped to the extreme but ultimately short-lived. Football is not a fad.
Football at it's highest level requires an enormous amount of skill, which in itself justifies a good portion of the wages the players recieve. When you factor in that many footballers retire by 33 years old or therabouts, or even earlier if forced to by injuries which are a constant threat to them during their playing days, the rest of their wages are fully justified.
Sure, football is a walk in the park, but last time you walked in the park, did someone try to break your legs?
