Ok.

I put my PCs IPs into the xbox but it saying the network gateway setting don't match. I'm assuming I have to change the LAN network settings to match the PC settings too.

Ignore the Xbox for just now.

I take it the modem is set to get all settings automatically from BT? If so, go to start, then run, then type "cmd" to bring up a DOS type box. Then type ipconfig and press enter. This ought to bring up some information. Try the addresses you get there on the Xbox.

Yep the xbox should be going through the PC on ICS. The PC is using a standard BT modem.

I have the microfilter setup properly.

Do I have to setup IPs for the network connection? It gives me the option.

If I setup the BT connection with different IPs (rather than get it to automatically find them) it doesn't work, which is no suprise. It freezes if I tell it to get the IP's automatically and give it some DNS numbers to go to that I got off the BT website to do with xbox live rather than let it get DNS automatically.

Something's not right.

What do you have connected to the line? You can only have one ADSL device connected to it at a time. So that means a modem, or a router, but not both. And remember you need microfilters between the line and normal phones.

I got some of the odder ones by searching around for people having similar problems with BT and from offical BT stuff to do with other routers - although their online help really is a mess.

You don't think it's because of a limitation of devices on the same line do you?

It's the same DNS error I got when trying with my router. :S

What IP and DNS addresses did you try and why? Where did you get them from?

ICS through the PC.

The PC's connected through a BT yahoo account but I keep getting 'DNS error' from the xbox each time I try to connect to Live.

I've tried various IP settings and DNS settings but nothing seems to work.

Talk me through the problem. How things are connected and what you have setup.

Still can't get this DNS problem sorted with Live.

Think I might cancel the contract to start a new one with BT that gets me the proper live setup from the word go.

They get an extra 6 months of guaranteed contract payments and I get my Live setup going.

Should work providing they'll let me get out of the original contract, which considering it ends up making more money for them and if they don't at the end of this 6 months I'm going elsewhere, I think they'll go for it.

Anyway, I need to grab a shower.
