I think it's more or less happened.

I think the only thing left is to decide who owns the franchises.
I think Rare should have all the ones they made because:

a) They made them
B) Nintendo aren't planning to use them properly anyway.

It hasn't happened yet.

No matter what any crappy mag says or Internet Site, I saw it on a BloomBerg machine today. 'Microsoft still in talks with Nintendo concerning Rare... blah blah'.

After Dark on the XBox does sound good...

Rare aren't worth it from a financial point of view.

Nintendo want people who make lots of little games - better for business.
Rare make longer, larger games, but with larger devellopment times as a result. Better games = better value for money= good for gamers, but it's hardly making Nintendo the big bucks so they didn't see the need to completely buy Rare out.

Stampers really wanted to sell so they looked elsewhere.

MS gave them the money they needed.

Nintendo obviously miss them, but aren't so bothered because the Gamecube has plenty of good games without Rare, and Rare weren't hugely profitable anyway.

So Nintendo sell Rare off.

Erm.. Microsoft don't own Rare yet. They are still in talks with Nintendo.

Who cares, Rare aren't worth it. If Shigsy thinks so, it must be true.

Rare don't need Game Design support.

They've learnt plenty from Nintendo.

All they need is the technical support of this new hardware (something MS CAN give them) and do the thinking and the imagination themselves.
That's what MS bought them for.

They'll get financial support, of course, but MIcrosoft don't have as much gaming experience as Nintendo, so they can't offer the same level of support on game themes and ideas.

What did MS reportedly pay for Rare? Wasn't it something like $2 billion?

And you think, after paying that much money, they won't support them?

Interesting theory!

my point being that people will by the rare games if the console also has more good games.

It would of course beb better if Rare stayed, even if they did only produce one game every 2 years, because then you would get an extra good game every two years, like PD or Starfox (hopefully).
But if they aren't going to make any games until 2004 (which they wouldn't after Starfox), then we aren't really missing much, are we? Especially if Nintendo use the money they save from not having to subsidise Rare, and yhe money which they gain from selling Rare on better things, like new development studios, then we will get better games, more frequently.
I don't think Rare will do as well on the Xbox as they did on the N64, purely because they won't get as much support from Microsoft as they did from Nintendo. People will become disheartned when they only play one Rare game every 2 years, because they would be among the only must have titles available on the Xbox.
Sure Rare make good games, but Nintendo, Capcom, Sega and many other companies make equally good games much more frequently. I doubt GC owners will really notice that Rare have gone, and I doubt that Xbox owners will notice that Rare are exclusive to Microsoft.
The only place that you'll see a difference will be in the magazines, with infrequent screenshots of Rare games disappearing from Gamecube magazines and appearing in Xbox magazines.
