Hey.

I was wandering if you could spare a moment of your time to advise me on personal statements. I'm writing mine at the moment. Applying to Oxford (Merton & Hertford/Jesus), Warwick, York, Durham (University) and Bath for Biology, and Bangor for Marine Biology. I'm predicted AAB for A-Level, and I reckon if I work I can push it to AAA (We don't take general studies round my way. Because it's gay and worthless.)

So, I've got a quote from a famous biologist who's name I'm sure I'll recall any minutre now riduculing Louis Pasteurs theory of germs, and I'll use it to demonstrate how the field of biology is always changing and I want to be a part of it. Then I get stuck. I've got plenty of extracurricular activities to chat about - Duke of Edinburgh, squash leagues, scuba diving e.t.c. I just don't know how to write it into a personal statement.

So, any advice would be good from you guys, being at top universities like you are. Although Oxford is, of course, better than Cambridge or LSE ;)

Cheers.

Due to the fact I haven't done anything that has remotely taxed my brain since my last exam, my attention span is worryingly low, even more so that I'm starting in a few weeks. :)

However, it is long enough to write one tip at a time, so here is the first of my Words of Wisdom™...

Tip 1) Don't write long words constantly to try and show intelligence, it will just make you seem pretentious, like you're trying too hard. Use it when appropriate, but apart from that don't bother. One of my friends from school started his personal statement with the word 'Quintessentially...'

He didn't get in.

And I wish A-Levels were as p***-easy as Scottish Highers. But they're much harder. So Oxford's AAB request will be met with my AAB, hence a good personal statement. I wish you luck at some crap Scottish uni.

Jesus..

Cheers Happyman. I just got back from school to find my copy of Jay and Silent Bob waiting for me. So now I'm off to watch it.

I've managed to get "marine flora and fauna" in so far. Must be good.

Just make sure you get the word 'multifarious' in there.

Worked for me.

For my personal statement I'm going to have a rant of how the world annoys me and how I want to know what makes some people tick and how we act as a group. Nothing about climbing Mount Everest or looking after the elderly or "socialising".

*should be in school*
