I decided to bite the bullet and dig deep this afternoon (read: I bought Mafia).

At first, I was thoroughly disappointed. After the game chose the recommended settings for my system, which were quite high, I thought 'great', but then 'not so great' when the game absolutely crawled on the first mission.
However, after a bit of tweakage with the settings, I realised that it was the 'hardware T&L' that was doing the damage, as all the street lamps at night were giving me poor ol' girl a bit of a hard time. Now though, the game's pretty smooth 98% of the time.
Second thought was that the initial, taxi-based missions were DULL! Still, I suppose it's only setting a bit of background...it gets A LOT more interesting once you actually join the Mafia!
Gameplay-wise, everything is pretty top notch, first-class entertainment so far, although I can't help thinking it's basically the same as GTA3 (with more action indoors) and the general handling of the vehicles can be really irritating at first. Still, stick at it and it comes eventually. :)

At the moment, I'm on a mission called 'The W***e' (I think)...no prizes for guessing what's roughly involved in this mission. ;) Having a bit of a hard time taking out/evading all the guards in the building, but once you get yourself a sawn-off shotgun, things get a fair bit easier.

Oh, and for all the perves out there, you'll be glad to here the female interaction hots up a bit at times. Don't forget, this game IS a 15. ;)

Well, I completed it last night. I really enjoyed playing it, but it's a little on the short side. Overall, I don't think it's as good as GTA3.

The Freeride mode is okay, but there's little to do once you've completed the main game. Many of the areas (airport and port etc.) aren't open in the Freeride or Freeride Extreme modes - unless I'm missing something.

My only real gripes are with the AI. Sam and Paulie getting themselves killed stupidly on a number of missions is frustrating, and some of the traffic AI (while generally better than GTA3) also loses the plot, with frequent stupid traffic jams and collisions etc.

It's all very well designed, but I can't believe it took longer to develop than GTA3. Maybe they were having trouble putting it together and reverse-engineered DMA's streaming technology? Three 'islands' joined by bridges and tunnels, a port, an airport... development may have started before GTA23, but that doesn't mean they didn't see GTA3 and borrow ideas.

A very good game, but they were beaten to the punch by about a year.

Thanks, I thought maybe something had to be done with the trains but I was trying with the steam train.
Then I had to go to pub.

Do you see Morello's car? He's hiding in the building next to it.
To open the big iron door, first adjust the train rail switches so that they align and guide a train to that building, then find the petrol tanker train carriage and use the small brick-wedge under it's front wheel.
The train should start moving, then crash into the door, giving you the chance to go in and wup Morello's lucky butt.

Thought about buying this game on tuesday, but bought Medal of honour instead.

I'm clever.

I'm on that level, have killed all the guys I can find, even the guys in the 4 cranes but can't find Morello. Where is he?
I have looked all over and can't seem to find him.

Yeah that level's a pisser eh? Especially when you get to the last bit and Paulie likes to stand in fire and get burned to death.

I find unleashing the tommy-gun into his head after the 14th attempt a great stress relief.
Or get in a car and run him down.

I'm currently trying to kill the bloke in the train yard but keep getting picked off by the two mooks in the crane
*shakes fist at them*

Excellent game, even with suspect AI sometimes. And I hated that race mission with a passion.

Quick hint for the being-pursued missions:
Stop the car and get out, gun the driver down and then take your time picking off the gun-toting gangster passengers as they get out.

Heh!

I wouldn't say I suck... just had some issues with a couple of missions. The race was much easier on the internal view - I did it at the 2nd attempt.

This one, the AI was peeing me off, because Paulie and Sam kept costing me the mission. I don't mind failing missions because of my own stupidity, but when it's through no fault of my own, I get angry!

Wow, you really do suck at this game. I completed it first time, along with every single other mission save for the racing one and the airport one
