Reading a mag the other day I found out how to speed up my PC when it is booting up by changing settings in msdos.sys.

The thing about tips like this is you can only really come across them and you can't really search for them as you don't know they exist. (if you know what I mean!)

Anyway, anyone got any cool tips for improving Windows 98 by a method like this?

Yeah, I was just being pedantic. The energy isn't lost really, just transferred away as kinetic energy, not heat (although it will appear warmer since it is microkinetic energy...) :)

Rob was right then as energy lost by particles and the PC hitting each other must be kinetic? :-S

Sound is the movement of particles - thus kinetic

Give or take a few for energy lost into the atmosphere as heat converted when the box rubs against air molecules.

So it will hit the ground with around 300J of energy....

Not sure. 30 kilos? I'll get a precise measurement for you on Monday if you really want. It has survived the equivalent of a ground-floor-sindow drop though.

erm.... Well you're not trying that with mine! I would be surprised if it didn't get damaged. Computers are fairly heavy, and would hit the ground with a fair amount of force. How much does your computer weigh rob?

Depends, of course, on how high up in a building you are. Dropping it from the 102nd floor of a skyscraper would more than likey reduce the lifespan of your PC, and any unlucky passer-by. However, dropping out of a ground floor window would probably not do much damage. Cheers for the advice anyway.

Looking around the web I have found a fair few decent tips for new shortcuts which shutdown the PC with one click etc

There are plenty more if you can be bothered looking.
