Why do most ADSL providers like BTOpenworld, Freeola and Freserve charge £29.99 a month for ADSL connections when there are others like Pipex that only charge £23.44 a month.
What's the difference and if there isn't one, why don't Freeola make it cheaper?

Is the firewall easily configurable - e.g. deny ports etc? Also, what is NAT? I've heard it before but never known what it means...

Such as? Using my linux box is still an option...

Most routers have built-in firewall, NAT and IP forwarding. Seeing as routers are hubs themselves, they're all set up for networking. Andi's has a web-based interface (the router run a webserver on a certain port, which has admin stuff on it). However, I'm going to go for the cheaper "plug in to one machine as router" option, not because it's cheaper, but because I think it gives you more control. There's stuff Linux can do that routers can't, unsurprisingly :)

He's right ya know andi. I've already added a few fake numbers and it hasn't given any errors. They don't send any confirmation emails or phone calls coz otherwise I would have got one....

It says on the BT website, all you need to do is register interest, not sign up for anything.

You use PPPoA? Is that like PPPoE (ethernet)? I've never seen the point in that.

Is that easier? What about firewalls etc? Do you just have one per machine? Also, which PC does your IP address get sent to if you are on a network? e.g.:
If my External IP Address is 172.186.12.87, and someone typed that in, can I set it to look for a web server on my network at address: 192.168.0.1 ?

Won't work, BT will only install the BB gear in your exchange once a set number of people have actually signed up for broadband, not just registered their interest.

If you get a router (like I've got, more expensive than a modem though..) then you just plug it into the hub, otherwise, you need to plug the modem into the PC and set the network up to use it as a gateway.
They do ADSL for £24.99 a month, anybody know how good they are?
Anyway, what I want to know is this: I have an old pc running :inux Mandrake 8.1 (P133Mhz, 32MB). I also have a small network with 3 PCs on (plus the linux box which I haven't put on the hub yet). If I get Broadband, can I feed it straight into the hub (5 Port Hub) or shall I put it through my Linux machine and leave that on permanently?
