Yeah but I was replying to the fact that you said he could transfer it to a 'better PC' which is going to make no difference whatsoever if the original recording is crap. But yeah most soundcards have inputs but they're hardly of superior quality. For a start most of them are analogue.
Anyway this is all fairly subjective cos the guy who asked the question hasn't given us any other information. I was merely suggesting a best case scenario.. if he wanted decent professional results. After all why else would he want to use a laptop when a md recorder would do??
Oh yeah I'm just gonna be picky here.. Full Duplex makes no difference if you wish to edit audio. It only really makes a difference in the recording of professional audio where inputs and outputs of a soundcard are required to be used simultaneously (ie for record and playback at the same time). A standard (half duplex) soundcard will suffice for audio editing.

heh, audio depends on how it's recorded, any soundcard can record good audio, you'll only need a good one if you write music (MIDI) or edit audio (full duplex) can't imagine he'd need lots of inputs/outputs, as long as it supports stereo or dolby which is pretty standard then he'd be fine.

You can plug it into the laptop's soundcard or get a microphone that plugs into the usb port, pretty sure theres some around. As Nimco suggested, dictaphones plug into PCs.
> An external interface? well, they only support MIDI.
No they dont. There are tonnes of USB/Firewire external interfaces that support both analogue and digital audio signals. Trust me, I own one.

Not actually true. Depending on what he is recording he would need the best possible soundcard/interface his budget could afford. It doesn't matter if he's transferring it to a better PC later if the source recording is crap it isn't going to make any difference whatsoever.

And how do you plug a microphone/guitar/keyboard directly into a USB/Firewire port? With an interface.
Thing is, he doesn't really need a good soundcard if hes recording, he only really needs it to get a rough idea of whats been recorded then he can take it home and transfer it onto a better PC.
Most laptops come with firewire/usb ports now anyway so he wouldn't really need an external port.
I've used one and not had any problems
try
www.edirol.co.uk
Its the roland pc music division
There are plenty around
yamaha make one and roland have a whole subsidary company dedicated to them (the name escapes me right now).
Just make sure you have a decent amount of memory and a fast and big hard drive..!
I will post some sites when I've got some time (damn Java studies).
My dad got a good spec laptop from ... Time *shudders* the other day, it was a very good price too, theres usually something much better online than in shops but the laptop from Time had a 15" screen and I havn't found any reasonable priced laptops with anymore than a 14"..*sigh*
Should be here along with WinXP in the next couple of weeks though.
