I wandered into Dixons on Friday to get an ink cartridge for my Dads PC. While I was there I saw a Dolby Digital 5.1 system thing connected to an Xbox. I've wanted one for a while, so I went over and had a look.

To cut a long story short, it was going on the cheap, so I bought.

Oh. My. God.

I didn't realise how much of a difference it would actually make to my games. So far, because of work etc, I've only tried it with Amped, Halo and PGR. I've watched LotR with it as well.

It is untrue.

In Amped, you can hear the snow swishing around you, and hear the other boarders as they go past etc. On PGR you can hear all the other cars around you, can you don't have to bother with the review mirror, as you can tell which side of you they're trying to overtake on.

Halo is unbelievable! Youi no longer need the radar, just some ears that work. The sub producers great bass as ships fly past overhead.

As for LotR, it was just like being back in the cinema. I don't know how many of you have a surround setup, but I'd highly recommend you got one. My kit was only £150.

:-D

I love my sub woofer :D It came with a load of other speakers which total 300 watts RMS (not including sub, as it's an active sub). But I have the option on my amp to turn on and off certain speakers.

So if I turn off all the speakers, and leave the sub on, turning it up to full power will actually shake my desk, even though the sub is on the floor. Surely this must be damaging my house (and my sub, too ;-))

Also in films, I can actually feel the wind coming from the subwoofer. Nice 'n' windy, actually adds a lot to the film. Only touches my feet though, it's way too heavy and powerful for a desk :D

God bless Yamaha, and their subs that are about 4 times as big as my Xbox. People say Xbox is big, phft.

Hey Garbe, put your Subwoofer on the floor and turn the volume up for a better rumble function :D

If you want a budget system that doesn't look like a hacked out PS2 check out the Philips A3.600, which has flat panel speakers and a RMS of 100w which is good for £120.

I have just ordered mine today! Yamaha TSS-1 set me back £169.99 but it gets amazing reviews and it even supports DTS! The only problem with the SR one is that it can't be used with TV's and as far as I am aware it doesn't have an Optical input!

I know what you mean, it's like that with Thief 1 & 2. Makes hiding from guards a lot easier :)

All of you should get surround sound by the time Thief 3 is released.

Well technically yes, the 256 channels that Xbox produces is split into 5 channels plus the bass.
If you had a system with 256 speakers then you could have one speaker for every channel (in theory) which would be nice.
