Hey, my Mum keeps shuttig down my computer in the morning because of the noise it makes, even though I am doing everything I can to quieten it. I have just spent £20 on a Papst silent fan FFS, so I'm not happy about her constantly turning this off at all.

Can anyone think of any steps I can take?

I think I might have found a solution.

My PC is getting slow so I was playing around disabling some of the services using 'msconfig'. I found that I had a process running called fast.exe, so I tried disabling it. When I disabled it, I found out what it does:

fast.exe is responsible for detecting the Windows Key + L shortcut and giving it the same job as Start > Log Off > Switch Users.

When it is disabled however, you get a different thing happening. When you hit Win + L afterwards, you are taken to a Win 2K style log off screen, where you can only log back in as yourself - e.g. not Guest. As well as this, there is no Shutdown button.

To stop it running, try the following:

Start > Run > msconfig
Go to the Services tab.
Uncheck the box next to 'Fast User Switching Compatibility'
Restart

This should help you I think.

disconnect the lights in the case and turn the monitor off. Claim that you can't hear any noise and your mother may think that she has become so paranoid about your PC's noise output that she has begun to imagine it.
