That is the question that I currently ponder.

My friends have, apparently, got wind of a new drug called 'Saliva'. You smoke it. It's like pot, but trippy - you hallucinate, you belive your dreams are real, and it's supposed to be spiritually enlightening. According to them it has never killed anyone, never done any real damage. It's perfectly safe.

But still, I am worried. I have grown quite fond of my brain, and it would not be helpful for me if it was turned to mush by a bad trip. It would also not be helpful for me to choke on my own vomit, as I have nearly managed once before by going on a 'whitey'.

I'm not sure what to do...Hicks says that drugs are good, whilst Aronofsky shows me just how funned up things can get. I know the stuff I'm gonna do is hardly heroin, but still...

Advice, please.

(This post is, obviously, a story, written completely in character)

Oh please spare me the Daily Mail hysteria.
Know what you are taking, how to and ensure everything is in place and you are in minimal danger of "freaking out" or any of that 1950's public safety programming rubbish.

As it happens, I have a friend who had to see a therapist following a bad lsd trip while on holiday in america. She was convinced that she had been abducted by aliens whilst sat in the back of her friends car.

true story. and I doubt it's the worst out there.

So I advise you Goatboy to know YOUR facts, before you go advising that there no danger, just choice. Because there IS danger, be it psychological of physical. Perhaps legalisation would solve the issue, but so long as it's not legal, you CANNOT trust what it is you are taking, and so it can only be advised that you avoid it.

See, the difference is I have taken numerous trips with no obvious side-effects.
And before you hand me the "ah but what about long term?" argument, the same can be said for any drug, legal or otherwise.

The "danger" with hallucinagenics is not knowing what you are taking, the correct dosages/procedures and the environment/state of mind you are in before starting.
Much the same with booze, if you're in a bad mood before then you'll end up punchy and unpleasant.

If you are just going to gobble a handful of pills/mushrooms/blotters and go off with mates to the pub, of course you are going to experience something that may not be entirely pleasant.
Yet again, it's the morons giving the rest of us a bad name.

Leave serious mind-altering substances to those that take the care and effort to minimise any dangers.
Of course nothing is 100% safe, but by the same token - you are not going to go mental simply because you have taken a trip.

It's always polar opposites in these arguments though.
"It's perfectly safe"
"It'll kill you!"

It's neither.
It can be dangerous, but it can also be harmless.
Just both sides of the argument are needed instead of universal condemnation by people that have no personal experience on the subject.

Well, I maintain that it may not be abuse of the drug that is the danger, but what you don't know is in it.

I am fully prepared to say things like:

ecstacy (mdma) is perfectly safe, and was actually used in the states as a marriage counselling drug.

heroin (morphine) is just a heavy anaesthetic, and only overdose will kill you.

or things like that.

And while I'm sure you have taken every precaution to ensure that the substances you use are perfectly safe, others do not. Perhaps due to time constraints, or perhaps due to not actually knowing there is a danger.

Certainly, there is a need for education on both sides of the argument. Chances are, popping an ecstacy tab down your throat won't kill you. However, there IS a chance that directly or indirectly such a thing could happen, however small. People need to know the facts, and where the risks lie.

Personally, I will never take such substances, as however small the risks are, small odds have a habit of coming back in my face, and I'd rather not take the chance that the one tab I choose to buy happens to be laced with dog worming powder.

If I could gurantee it wouldn't kill me, and if it were LEGAL, I might try such things.

That said, I shy away from tesco value burgers, which won't kill me, and are legal. But to be honest I don't want to be associated with them...

I wouldn't go near the burgers either, that's just taking your life into your own hands there.

Nah. My family have lived for generations back in India without Meat.

My Grandad has never ate meat and he is 90 somthin now and still pretty healthy. Although he is a pretty heavy smoker...

Aint no save the world crap. I just dont like the thought of taking a life to fill my belly. And i dont actually like the thought of eating animals.

I'm perfectly healthy. Have never had any serious health problems and havnt had to visit the docters in like 7 years.

Yeah, as i understand it, vegeterian diets are usually healthier than everyone else's.
So long as you get enough protien anyway (lack of which explain why so many veggies are scrawny :O) ).

OK firstly you assume that the vegetables you are eating weren't alive before they were hacked out of the ground, chopped, boiled and dumped on your plate.

Second, the protein supplements you probably have to keep your diet healthy come from what?

"I won't take a life to eat". Such crap. Vegetables live. Cereal crops live, so do trees, and houseplants. Hell, even some plants take "lives" to continue their own survival. The entire argument is ambiguous.

Just eat it. If it's good for you, who cares where it came from?

Taking the view that "If it's legal it must be safe" is incredibly stupid. Drinking is legal and it kills. Smoking is legal and it kills. I'm not saying that smoking and drinking are bad because I enjoy both but you shouldn't put your trust in authorities who decide what's good and what isn't without trying it themselves.
