Now, I'm going to get it off Special Reserve, and this is what I think I'll get.
1: - X-Box Console, Official Controller, SCART Lead and Halo - £209.99
2: - Extra Official Controller - £22.99
3: - Wreckless - £24.99
----------
TOTAL: - £257.97
Now, I'm lucky enough to have a brother who will willingly pay half of the price, leaving me only having to pay around £130.00.
However, I am having second thoughts (and this is where you X-Box fanatics can really sing Microsoft's praises). These are the questions I'd like answered, if you'd be so kind:
1: - Am I making the right choice with what I'm buying?
2: - What (bar Halo and Wreckless) good games are there out on X-Box?
3: - What good games are there to come on X-Box?
4: - What does the future hold (in terms of internet, etc)?
5: - How can I convince my parents another console is a worthy purchase?
Of course, I'll be reading up on this in magazines and on the internet, but after chatting in here for a while, it seems like there are a lot of people with a lot of knowledge so I'd be interested to hear some reccommendations, etc.
Thanks,
Maverick42.

just read loadsa reviews of every game that vaguely interests you...
Amped is a game that on envolves trciks, no races which is a very big bonus as it gives you time to concentrate 100% on pulling of death-defying tricks, I only rented the game but in 1 week-end I knotched up about 32 hours of gameplay and I felt I could still play the game. The game is very interesting and every time you gain points or sponsors you can upgrade your riders skills. Boards, extra clothing, sponsorship videos and a wrold rankings all play a mjor part of the game eyt they are all unique in their own way. This is a snow-boarding game with a difference, 100% tricks, fast furious action and the option to play/customise your own songs from the Hard-Drive and play them back through the game. There are about 5 full albums already built into the game from Amrican Rock/Rap/Dance/Trance and Pop bands, the game is huge! I would definatley recommend this game to anyone who owns an Xbox, it will stay in your Xbox for a very long time and it has some superb replay value.
If you haven't played Burnout then I can tell you now, I completed it in under 3 hours, I found the gameplay boring, the graphics are OK and he sounds are nothing to shout about. At first I thought it was a superb game and it is at first, but with repetitive gameplay you might want to look in the direction on Project Gotham Racing, as I said I have chose this for a GAD win and I can't wait to play it, trust me this game beats GT3 in terms of gameplay and in my opinion graphics, try it out at least.
Xbox live is strickly for gaming purposes only, surfing the net will not be a possibilty, but who wants that when you have what the service is going to deliver, after all PCs are for using the internet. The service is going to be between £15-20 subscription to Xbox Live and then you have all the Broad-Band fees on top of that, at the end you are looking at £50 a month at least just to run Xbox Live, but it will be worth it.
You sound as though you are into the same type of games that I am, I am into:
First person shooters
3rd person shooters
action/adventure
Sometimes RPG
If you like those style try out these on the Xbox:
Blade 2 (Read a lot of previews and looks awesome)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Commandos 2
Conflict Desert Storm
Dead To Rights (can't wait for this one, like Max Payne)
Delta Force: Black Hawk Down
Deus Ex 2 (loved the 1st one on PC, highly anticipated)
Die Hard
Dino Crisis 3 (looking forward to this one)
Duke Nukem Forever
Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind (can't wait)
Enter The Matrix
Good Cop Bad Cop
Halo 2 (If you have read my synopsis above you know what I think)
Hitman 2 (completed the first on PC and can't wait for this)
James Bond 007: NightFire
Max Payne 2 (my 4th most highly anticipated)
Medal Of Honour: Frontline (looking forward to this one)
Medal Of Honour: Allied Assault (not yet confirmed)
Metal Gear Solid: Substance (can't wait, completed PS2 version)
Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (highly anticipated)
Project Ego (highly anticipated)
Rainbow Six: Raven Shield
Return to Castle Wolfinstien (Big 1st Person Shooter fan, can't wait)
Serious Sam
Shenmue II (definate purchase, revolutionised gaming on Dreamcast)
Shenmue III (can't wait for this one, completed 1+2 on Dreamcast)
SWAT: Global Strike Team (Highly anticipated, loved SWAT 3 on PC)
Terminator Dawn of Fate
Timesplitters 2
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon (highly anticipated)
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell (won best graphics and best Xbox game at E3)
Unreal Championship
They are the ones I am seriously interested in, I will definatley be getting all the 1st person shooters, but I will also be getting a lot of the 3rd person action/adventure games. I will get the vey good racing games that are released but racing isn't a genre I am mad on (having said that I own RalliSport Challenge and soon PGR).
If you want any extra help just ask, I don't mind :)
I kind of had my heart set on Wreckless thanks to reviews I've read and recommendations from friends, but I'll trust your judgement and rent/borrow it first. It is however, only £24.99 (SR price) so it might be worth getting anyway.
Halo, I've always wanted to get from the moment I saw it, and nothing could have changed my mind about that. After reading your comments on the game (which I've never actually played), I'm 100% convinced. Max Payne I have on the PS2 but I was never THAT impressed with it. The bullet time was amazing though, but that blood trail was plain boring. I also have GT3 on the PS2, which I wouldn't call a good game, because it's far too realistic. I like racing games like BURNOUT where you can zoom round corners at 200mph. I've never really been into fighting games (apart from the excellent Super Smash Bros. Melee) so maybe Dead Or Alive 3 isn't for me. The one part about GT3 I did like, however, was the rally part, so I'll look into RalliSport challenge. Tony Hawk's 3, I've played on the PS2, and because I've got used to those controls, I'll be getting the fourth installment on the PS2 too. This Amped, I've heard a lot about though, what's it like?
Thanks to your list of future realeases I've seen quite a few that appeal to me. I'll definitely be getting Halo 2, Shenmue II, Shenmue III and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell. I might get Burnout 2, Deus Ex 2 and Max Payne 2. I'm not too sure about the rest.
If there was something to make me say I'm getting an X-Box no matter what, it was that paragraph on the future. Those online capabilities you mentioned sound amazing and after hundreds of stressful hours of trying to get Unreal Tournament to work online on the PC, this seems to be a good way of doing it. The only thing I'm concerned about is the monthly/yearly fee. Also, will you be able to surf the internet like you would on a PC?
Thanks for the convincing tips, but once I show my parents what the X-Box can do, I think they'll want it too! My dad's into new technology movements and stuff, and respects Microsoft.
Thanks again,
Maverick42.
2: Forget Wreckless, not a good game in my opinion and if you ask other Xbox users if they liked/like this game or not they will probably tell you the same thing. As for games outside Halo, there are quite a few, here are the ones that I would *DEFINATLEY* buy if I was you:
Halo - In my top 3 games of all time (along with Shenmue and Max Payne) and definatley the best first-person shooter of all time, the game is absorbing, lenghty and one of the best gaming experiences out there. The game is spread over 10 levels of extreme size, team up with Marines, Drive awesome land and air vehicles and fight your way through different Alien forces in order to escape Halo, this is without a doubt a near perfect title!
10/10
Max Payne - As I stated above, this game is possibly the most *COMPELLING* title ever made, the story blows is towers above any other game available and the world of 'gangster' land New York is brought to life in a game that deserves the *BAFTA* that it won, the graphics are unbelievable and the sounds are easily the best on a video-game, this game is behind Halo in my list of games but not by much!
9.7/10
Project Gotham Racing - Just chose this game for a GAD win and after playing the Demo I knew straight away that this game was a bench-mark title. The cars look breath-taking and the level of realism has gone up along way since MSR on the Dreamcast. After playing GT3 on the PS2 for 5 months (nearly straight) I can safely say that this is a better alternative, fast racing, awesome cars, customizable sound-tracks and a points system that revolutionises console gaming! Definatley pick this game up!
9.6/10
Dead Or Alive 3 - If you are looking for a game to show of your Xbox's power, this is the one. The graphics are the *BEST* I have ever seen and the gameplay is spot on. Each fighter has their own characteristics, fight on multiple levels, smash opponents through buildings, glass and any other in-game object that gets in the way, the level of interactivity is outrageous and it makes this game the top fighter of all time, do not deny yourself this experience!
9.2/10
RalliSport Challenge - Yet another Xbox graphical master-piece, this game both looks great and sounds awesome, customize your own sound tracks for playback, race in different gaming environments, winning races will unlock new cars which are required for the later races, a very kind learning curve which starts off easy but quickly becomes very hard. This game will take you a long time to complete but it is definatley worth it! By far the best Rally game I have ever played and a must own Xbox title.
9.1/10
Those are the games which I own, but I have played the following games games (completed them all) and this is what I would give them out of 10, some aren't bench-mark titles but they have been play tested by myself and this what I would give them:
Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3 - 9.6/10
Amped: Freestlye Snowboarding - 9.4/10
James Bond In Agent Under Fire - 9.2/10
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee - 9.1/10
Gun Valkyrie - 9.0/10 (Very Hard)
Jet Set Radio Future - 8.8/10
Ultimate Fighting Championship: Tapout - 8.6/10
Spider Man: The Movie - 7.4/10
Wreckless - 6.9/10
Burnout - 6.3/10
3: Below is what games are to come on the Xbox over the next year and a half, this is just a personal copy of the release calendar which I keep and look over to descide what is a worthy purchase:
Air Force Delta Storm
Black And White
Blade 2 (Read a lot of previews and looks awesome)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Burnout 2: Point Of Impact
Commandos 2
Conflict Desert Storm
Crazi Taxi 3: High Roller (hope it is as good as 1+2)
Dead To Rights (can't wait for this one, like Max Payne)
Delta Force: Black Hawk Down
Deus Ex 2 (loved the 1st one on PC, highly anticipated)
Die Hard
Dino Crisis 3 (looking forward to this one)
Duke Nukem Forever
Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind (can't wait)
Enter The Matrix
Good Cop Bad Cop
Halo 2 (If you have read my synopsis above you know what I think)
Hitman 2 (completed the first on PC and can't wait for this)
House of the Dead 3
James Bond 007: NightFire
Lord Of The Rings
Max Payne 2 (my 4th most highly anticipated)
Medal Of Honour: Frontline (looking forward to this one)
Medal Of Honour: Allied Assault (not yet confirmed)
Metal Gear Solid: Substance (can't wait, completed PS2 version)
Midtown Madness 3
Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance
Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis (highly anticipated)
Panzer Dragoon Orta (ground-breaking series)
Quantum Red Shift (Looks awesome, like Wipeout but better)
Phantasy Star On-line
Project Ego (highly anticipated)
Project Gotham Racing 2 (can't wait)
Rainbow Six: Raven Shield
Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc
Return to Castle Wolfinstien (Big 1st Person Shooter fan, can't wait)
Rocky
Serious Sam
Shenmue II (definate purchase, revolutionised gaming on Dreamcast)
Shenmue III (can't wait for this one, completed 1+2 on Dreamcast)
Soul Calibur 2 (if it as good as the first then we are in for a 10/10)
Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic (Looks to be shaping up nicely)
Superman: The Man Of Steel
SWAT: Global Strike Team (Highly anticipated, loved SWAT 3 on PC)
Terminator Dawn of Fate
Timesplitters 2
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon (highly anticipated)
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell (won best graphics and best Xbox game at E3)
Unreal Championship
WWE: Raw Is War (Looking foward to this one)
WWE: Raw Is War 2
X-MEN Wolverines Revenge
That is the release list for games over the next year and a half, the games I am really looking forward to come with a description in brackets, but to be honest I am looking forward to them all! This release calendar looks out of this world, the games are very widely spread across different genres.
4: The future of the Xbox looks very strong indeed, Xbox Live will be launched towards the end of this year and the realease calendar looks out of this world.
Xbox Live will utitlise the Xbox's Hard-Drive and will give gamers the oppertunity to:
Download Extra Levels/Characters/In game features
Enable players to play across the net (Unreal Championship is launch title)
Talk to other gamers on-line about Xbox games
Xbox Live will revolutionise the way we game, although the Dreamcast was the first console to have on-line capabilties it could never do what Xbox Live has planned. Utilisisng the Hard-Drive enables a gamer to extend their experience and ensure that they maximise gaming to its limit. Phantasy Star On-Line will enable players to play through a single campaign on the net (just like the Dreamcast version) but with drastic improvements over the Dreamcast version it looks like this game could be one to watch out for.
Microsoft are working on a Light-Gun for the Xbox at the moment, the Light-Gun is said to bring shooting games up to the level it should be at, House Of The Dead 3 is likely to be the first game available for the Light-Gun and by all accounts it should be something to get very excited about.
5: Ah yes, convincing your parents, the hardest yet most obvious trick in the book. First of all don't fall out with them at all on the lead up to the magical question. Work at them, show them screen-shots and explain to them what the Xbox is/can do. Tell them that if you get one you will keep quiet and stay out of the way for at least 5 years. Tell them you can win money for gaming tournamanets and explain to them the possibiblites of Xbox Live. Before discussing it with them talk about how well you are doing at school/work, discuss the *HIGH* grades you are achieving and how the manager constantly asks you about getting a pay rise and how a bonus will be in order in the near future. Most of all *BLAG* your way through the questions they ask you about why you want one and whay aren't you happy with what you have got, like me you sound like you are after everything on the market ;) If you require any more help in the convincing departement just let me know, I am an expert when it comes to convincing.
Hope this all helps!
