Ban or no ban I'd like to point out that in fact Hurn is 'almost' correct here. The flaw is with the question.
Take a close look at the question itself 'What is the meaning of life?'. This is a pointless question, it's like asking 'What is the meaning of that rock sitting over there?' The rock has no meaning, the same with life, both are just 'there'.
You don't look at a chimpanzee and ask yourself 'What is the meaning of that monkey's existence? To eat bananas? To climb trees?' You have to remember here that we are descended from the apes, therefore why should we question our existence? Because we are able to? It's a pointless train of thought.
Biologically speaking we are designed for procreation, and all activities we engage in are geared toward this end: Food, shelter and comfort are just a means to this end. The more food, the better shelter and the higher degree of comfort we can display the better chance we have of attracting a mate so that we can procreate. All life forms do this, including monkeys, and yet they don't stop to pause and think 'WHY am I doing all this? What's the point?' Humans do it simply because they now have more leisure time and more concepts available to them.
So our bodies tell us to have sex, our meaningful existence seems to depend on this, yet our minds question this meaningfullness seeking something higher. Hence the concept of God.
The concept of God allows humans to believe that there is true meaning to their existence, to serve Him so that on their passing they are granted eternal life. To an aetheist this is pure codswallop. Aetheists see 'believers' as brainwashing themselves from accepting the simple fact that life has no meaning.
The drawback here is that it's generally the aetheists who ask themselves 'what is the meaning of life' more often than religious people, who already 'believe' that they know the answer to the question.
On the upside, aetheists tend to have more fun because they know that whatever they do in life they aren't going to burn in hell for it afterwards. Bringing us back to sex.
Thank God I'm an aetheist.
I hope.
