Right, I've heard many reasons not to upgrade to XP. However, I won a copy of it in an online competition when it first came out and I was wondering whether it would be worth upgrading to. At the moment, I'm running Windows ME (Millennium Edition) and I'm happy with it.

But what does everyone else think of XP? Do you reckon I should upgrade or not? Thanx...

Yes, it's nice but you don't realise that they're generic unoptimised drivers that are written for a range of HP printers. It probably only got the name from the printer identifying itself.

Eg. I can't bind my middle click button to anything. Why not? Because it's using generic drivers which for some reason don't accept that I have a middle button, even though there are scroll wheel options.

?!?!

And I don't even know where to ger proper drivers for it, apart from the disc which I was given which is now AWOL. This sucks.

The other day I wanted to use my printer for the first time since reinstalling. So i get the lead, plug it into my USB port, bang my head on the desk, rub my head, carefully get out from under the desk, and see a little message in the corner saying "HP Deskjet 845C Ready For use"

Now that's what I call cool.

Go with XP, Pro if you can, but only if your machine has got the grunt to do it. I've had no problems with it except that my machine only just copes (P3-450 128MB RAM)

I wouldn't go as far as Rob as involving Nintendo, but it does look like an accident between MacOSX and Fisher Price.. I run mine in Classic.. as it reduces the load on the RAM.

The only problem I had was my Graphics Card. XP doesn't support STB Velocity 4400 AGP's! And isn't likely to in the future!:(

It's definately a good operating system, despite what Turbonutter said.

(by the way, Turbonutter doesn't have a clue what he's talking about - just likes to have a dig at Nintendo frequently using any excuse)

The only problems I've had on it so far are some compatability issues with the original Command & Conquer and Red Alert, and I can't make my own levels with Duke Nukem 3D.

Everything i have ever connected to my pc, Xp has known exactly what it was and has automatically installed drivers (that work perfectly), including scanners, cameras, printers and hard drives.?!
It even made my games run better than ever.

have you actually got XP turbo?

I had ME then went to XP Pro. ME was ok but it wasn't the best of Operating Systems and my directx always screwed up (something to do with Direct Draw or something) so gaming was a nightmare, which is one major reason I upgraded. XP is pretty good, at first it seems amazing but then after a while it doesn't seem that great, that was my feeling anyway. I was rather annoyed when I found out that my printer wouldn't work with XP as there was no driver for it..tut tut. I still don't have a printer, which is quite annoying!

WinXP is what would happen if Nintendo made operating systems - Fisher Price user interface, lack of support (software, drivers - especially generic ones) and it's aimed at 9 year old braindead users who really should know more about their computers. Sorry but I like to do things myself. All that and you need looaads of RAM to be able to run it properly, it's total bloatware, like most Windows OSs. It's the second best Windows, behind Win2K and in front of 98.

Thanx for the input guys. Although, I've never had a problem with ME, I think I will upgrade to XP after all.
