Right, I've heard many reasons not to upgrade to XP. However, I won a copy of it in an online competition when it first came out and I was wondering whether it would be worth upgrading to. At the moment, I'm running Windows ME (Millennium Edition) and I'm happy with it.

But what does everyone else think of XP? Do you reckon I should upgrade or not? Thanx...

YaY!!! If only I knew you could do that in the first place.

Because it pings at 120ms with 14.31KB/s max throughput?

Because it works? Linux isn't the one not supporting my decent modem here...

No, you convert FROM Windows, seeing as that's what everyone starts off on...

You could always just back it up before messing around with it. In regedit, go to File>Export, making sure that all the branches are selected when the option comes up in the Save Dialog box.

Now you can mess around all you like!

I..err..well..you see, I kinda..errmm....explored and screwed things up, such as the registry....yeah..erm..and more stuff.

But truth be told, I have learned something - do not mess about with the registry, whatever you do, unless you know what you're doing but you still may screw the PC up. ;)

What the bloody hell are you doing to it?!!?

My PC ran solidly for 3 weeks, 24/7, and all the time at 100% usage, and didn't crash once with XP!!

And yes, 2k is good.

I have a copy of Win2k, and have heard good things about it.
Is it a decent OS? I have XP Pro and I really am starting to hate it. At first, I was like 'yeahh, this is cool!' but now I see that it is annoying as it crashes quite a bit and I have had to format twice in the last 3 months.

I upgraded to XP last year, and ended up seriously regretting it, absolutely NO support whatsoever for half my games, especially newer games such as Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Alien Versus Predator 2, took me 2 weeks to even find drivers for most of my hardware, especially the modem, and also the damn thing screwed up my computer so badly I had to take it all the way back up to Leeds, to the shop where I bought it, and get them to do a full restore on it to put it back to factory settings, and a Windows ME OS.

My advice to you, is that unless you posess the patience of a Saint, lots of time to hunt down drivers etc, or the financial resources to get the Pro version, give Windows XP a miss.

Get OS X. You'll never turn back. Don't let the fact that you need a Mac to run it put you off.

Grr, using WinXP on Rar due to the fact this mobo has no ISA ports, and my only decent modem is ISA PnP, so no connection to Linux == Uselessness.

This is annoying me immensely, I want Debian back!
