COMPETITION NOW CLOSED - WINNER TO BE ANNOUNCED SHORTLY

Another day, another great opportunity to win an EXTRA GAMEADAY prize. That's one prize of any game of your choice if you are a member of SR, or one prize of an SR Membership with Free Gift, if you are not a member.

Take a look at this page:

http://registration.freeola.net/errors/e.php?ec=404

The purpose of this page is to show people that they have gone to the wrong page.

However, there is another important role for these pages, and that's to get people to our site! Most of the people seeing this error page have never heard of us, and we want them to become SR fans.

This competition closes on August 10th and will be judged by Loki himself.

To win you must design a simple, fast-loading page with sufficient innovation to achieve a high click rate to the following sites:
UKgames.com
UKpc.net
Freeola.com
GetDotted.com

Place the url in a reply in this thread and Loki will pop in from time to time and publish your link as a hotlink in this opening thread (so that people can easily see all the page designs you have entered).

You can enter as many times as you like and there will be one winner who produces the design which impresses loki the most. If no designs impress loki at all then he will not issue a prize.

It's vital that the page loads quickly. You are more likely to win with some clever wording than you are with flashy designs. You can use one of our stock banner, like the one shown on the error page at present, or you can make your design without a banner if you like.

Good Luck.

So you nick code from two other sites and say it's yours? I'd rather do my own code and have crap looking pages. :-P

Well, since you've finally finished Mr "I'm so great at web design", there are one or two problems with your page which you should really have noticed seeing as though you are a "professional."

Take a good look at all the pages on SR. They all have one thing in common which you have blatantly missed. If you can't spot what it is then I'd just keep your mouth shut about how great you are and how bad us amateurs are.

This is a competition and it's for fun. Besides, I thought web design was all about KISS. And what's the prob about just adjusting the exisiting one?

Finally someone with sense. In fairness there isn't one effort there (ok, baring one or two) that looks either professional or that I would consider worthy of publishing on a personal site, let alone a large company site such as freeola.

Considering how many 'regulars' (and newbies I suppose) in these chatrooms over the months and years have been claiming to build sites for professional clients, the standard is very poor. I could mention names but won't. This has been an oppotunity for some of you to put your money where your mouth is and show us what you actually do. And now we know.

One point that I'm not sure I agree with Tyla on is the 'reuse'. I suppose there are two approaches - one where you can let your creative juices flow and come up with something completely new and radical. The other is to design something based on the current look and feel of the site. I don't mean just copying a few existing jpgs and sticking them on a page as we have seen in this competition. But things such as the side bar menu, the game charts etc appear on most freeola pages. And keeping common themes, I think is a good idea.

But then I'm not the judge.

That actually sounded like some polictical speech Tyla :)
Not much to your pages but I like the numbers, heh.
Also the competition isn't really about design, they say decent wording will be better than a flashy design, the flashy design being a bonus, your right though, this is a big website, lots of people will see the page so it does need to be good but you can't just force yourself to create a good idea. Can't believe how far away the finish date for the comp is though, i'm guessing they havn't seen anything they like and doubt they'll get anything worty for a while to come :)

Also...even though Special Reserve own Freeola, Freeola is what should be advertised, I see the SR logo on some pages, it doesn't make sense to use it. I did because I thought i'd make a page wih a bit more colour.

Actually no... One corporate site launch, On new design proposal signed off, a difficult director silenced and got to spend the day laughing at my boss hobbling about on one foot! Quite a good day actually!

Cheers for asking!;)

Look... I wasn't say that it should be flashed.. in fact I hatethe damn thing, I was just pointing out that the no. of computers worldwide using flash or having flash installed was 96% meaning it is more wide spread than most people think...

Well done on your observation of the 10 second rule... indeed your're right there, but don't try to lecture me in how to go about desining and implementing websites... I do that for a living.

On a different note... my observations so far on the entries...

[rant]

80% of them look the same, and very near to the example that SR gave at the start... only a hand full of you have actually tried to be origonal and come up with somthing different and "off the wall" the rest.. you've just recycled other peoples ideas...

Your all quick enough to jump on each other regarding resolutions and screen widths, but most of you are totally dissolusioned in your ability to be creative and actually put any effort in producing something innovative and origonal.

Come on.. lets see some effort.. I know it's only a 404, but for some of you this will be the most public page any of you will have had published in your lives... make it worth it! make it something you'll be proud of!

Penetration rate?

Even if it takes 10 seconds to load, it's too long, SR wan't something quick that people can see instantly...
