The "Freeola Customer Forum" forum, which includes Retro Game Reviews, has been archived and is now read-only. You cannot post here or create a new thread or review on this forum.
Another day, another great opportunity to win an EXTRA GAMEADAY prize. That's one prize of any game of your choice if you are a member of SR, or one prize of an SR Membership with Free Gift, if you are not a member.
Take a look at this page:
http://registration.freeola.net/errors/e.php?ec=404
The purpose of this page is to show people that they have gone to the wrong page.
However, there is another important role for these pages, and that's to get people to our site! Most of the people seeing this error page have never heard of us, and we want them to become SR fans.
This competition closes on August 10th and will be judged by Loki himself.
To win you must design a simple, fast-loading page with sufficient innovation to achieve a high click rate to the following sites:
UKgames.com
UKpc.net
Freeola.com
GetDotted.com
Place the url in a reply in this thread and Loki will pop in from time to time and publish your link as a hotlink in this opening thread (so that people can easily see all the page designs you have entered).
You can enter as many times as you like and there will be one winner who produces the design which impresses loki the most. If no designs impress loki at all then he will not issue a prize.
It's vital that the page loads quickly. You are more likely to win with some clever wording than you are with flashy designs. You can use one of our stock banner, like the one shown on the error page at present, or you can make your design without a banner if you like.
Good Luck.

To be honest I don't care if you file my comments in a rubbish basket or up your a$se. Either way, with your comments on coding v's web design, you have demonstrated your lack of knowledge in both.
It's quite obvious where my code came from. It isn't a co-insidence that it looks like existing SR pages - it's a cut n paste job. Like I said, I was trying to convey an idea, not a design. Unlike some people, if I want a computer game I'll go and buy it. I don't have to rely on pocket money from mummsie or to win a GAD competition. I make and maintain other websites for fun, all of which are W3C XHTML complient, so it's not as if I don't know what I'm talking about. I've been in the business far too long to worry about comments from silly ickle boys like you.
I don't know where you got the FrontPage thing from? I didn't use it. (see cut-n-page comments above). But since you got me on the subject, I've nothing against FrontPage. I began my HTML journey with FrontPage. And I think it's pretty cool. It was one of the first wysiwug apps where if you put a table on a page, it writes the code for you. That, for me, was amazing and a great help in starting out. But I know it isn't everyones cup of tea and thats grand. I can live with that.
I also don't know which email address you're refering too. Are you sure you're looking at my 404 page?? Me thinks not. If you've been nosing around elsewhere and you're refering to the index page of the url, that isnt my page. It isnt my email address either. So yet again your argument is blown out the water. (one of the faces is tho, i'll leave you to figure... hehe)
Nimco, thanx for the compliment. I'm 100% confident that my CV and other sites I've built could prove that I could better anything that LordH does. But only in my own eyes. The whole concept of art and design (in any medium) is that everyone has different ideas and tastes on what looks good and what doesnt. Having said that, I still stand by my arguement that taking a SR picture and putting it on a webpage with a table and '404' on it, as we have seen in the competition doesn't really stretch the boundries of website design very far.
...and AJG is not *just* a code monkey!! I've a black belt in SQL and could VB and java code your a*se Tyla, ya cheeky git. :) But yeah, I don't do websites by profession. I'm a client-server man meself.
Anything else to add LordH? How about thinking about what you write before you post again. And if insults and name-calling is all you can offer, then don't bother. (sorry for the essay everyone else).

...a nice positive attitude ;) nice to see Rickoss. HTML isn't easy when your only just starting out and even thinking about php seems a little scary but the basics are very easy.
> Actually theres FunkyGamer, Nimco and soon to be Whooo!
It's nice to see only Whooo! entered!
> It sooo funny how just a simple comment about making a bit more effort

...heh, didn't upset me, if you didn't know so much about the internet i'd feel sorry for you, i'm sure you'd be a nice bloke if you didn't love yourself so much, live with that!
> There really is no need to decend to this level in these forums.
He sl@gs off our efforts and then posts one which isn't aligned properly. I've said that many times and that is why I think he is an idiot.....
> AJG is just a code mon-kay. not everyone does everything at once.
Well said Tyla, code mon-kays rule! Without people who know the in-depth workings of code (both web related and non-web related) this forum wouldn't even exist.

This forum uses a combination of PHP, MySQL, CSS, JavaScript, and HTML just on the web side of things! I'm not saying this forum is particularly secure by any means, but without people like me, AJG and Funkygamer, this forum wouldn't work at all - it would just fall apart.
But you seem to have some grudge against AJG. Would you care to explain to the rest of us why this is? From what I've seen in these forums, he's done nothing to offend you, other than pointing out the obvious and providing some constructive criticism.
AJG has considerably more knowledge in this industry than you do, and although he might not call himself a designer, I bet you anything you like he could do a much better site than you have yet proved you can - simply because he knows what he's talking about!
There are a few people in here who actually know what they're talking about because they have had several years experience - they have taken the time and effort not only to produce pages/scripts/programs, but also because they have learnt from their mistakes.
I look back on the scripts I wrote 6 months ago and can't believe some of the mistakes I've made - using variables instead of arrays, inconsistencies, potential security vulnerabilities etc. We are all learning - but the only way you can really learn in the real world is to learn from your mistakes, and this means accepting criticism.
Based on what I've seen, I would say that you have no reason to insult AJG, because he was simply trying to advise you on what you've done wrong. So get down off your high horse, and accept criticism where it's due. Try learning some of the graphic techniques that will help you improve your sites - I'm no designer so I haven't researched this in detail so ask someone decent like Tyla or Whooo!
But when you can come back to me and prove to me that you understand the following concepts and can apply them to your sites correctly, then maybe you can class yourself as a designer. This doesn't just mean finding out what they are and implementing them on your site. This means using them where necessary - it's all down to experimentation.
- Semiotics
- Rule of thirds
- Key photographic concepts
- User psychology
- Usability
And before you start having a go at me, this is advice - take it or leave it, but only the weak refuse advice.
I just code. Trying to learn script, it's not as hard as I thought. Gonna start trying php, but i can't be bothered at the moment.

There really is no need to decend to this level in these forums.
