That and the fact that i've got a copy of openoffice.org
woooo, even though i'll probably use MS Office for database's and misc word processing. I can also run some games off it too! yipee.
Anyway, I was pondering and other than making websites on my PC I like to listen to music and watch movies but i'm not sure of any download programs or p2p programs like KaZaA on Linux, so I was hoping someone might have an idea :)
I'd run KaZaA but i'd like to use as many Linux products as possible.

these are the two most popular graphical interfaces for linux. in a way, they're like themes - but more than just colours change. i wud recommend kde, as it has a more windows like interface....
I've got Debian Potato, got it from the Linux Emporium, very nice, it's 2.2.5r or something, do newer version install ontop of it? i'm guessing they would do.
All I see online and in mags are SUSE and Mandrake but Debian was recommended, what else can I say. (I only got one disc, the OS)
It's cool that OpenOffice.org reads MS Office files, thanks and yes, it is 1.0, it says it's the first stable version, erm even though 1.0 kinda gives it away. :)
gFTP...i've got absolutly no idea what this is *loads Google*
GNOME or KDE? once again, i've got no idea, how do I find out? isn't this a part of the distro? or do you have to install it as part of the OS? Whch one is better? KDE?
I think Linux will suit me though, at the moment i've got loads of free time, I really want to learn Linux, hopefully it will help me a lot and most of the software is free! which suits me fine.
I actually hadn't heard of Linux until you left Microsoft for it :) and it's not until recently that I found it does more than just scripting, i'mjust happy that I can use photoshop and Flash although new software is nice.

gFTP is very nice, but I need to know - are you using GNOME or KDE?
Oh, and I cannot stress this enough: *ALWAYS* use latest versions of software, the stuff on the 4-or-so discs you got with your distro is ancient, really amazingly ancient. If you don't use latest versions you'll think everything's crap, because, well, old stuff is crap.

Sure, anything Word/Excel/PowerPoint creates it can read, and you have the option to save in these formats as well.

Run "kterm" or "xterm", you'll see

CVS CVS CVS!!!

Ah, 1.0 then, good.

Well, luke's getting a bit annoyed at it now for some reason, but I like it a lot. S'changed the way I work, yadayadayada, but that's the truth.
*cough* whats a distro? i've heard about them, but all the information i've found is at best, a little vague.
Valhalla? *shrugs*
I've got absolutly no idea about Linux software, they don't make a habit of advertising it and I guess because most of it is Freeware they can't really afford to like Windows Software producers can.
Hopefully i'll learn a bit more as time goes on.
Quanta+ - i've already downloaded it, you say it's the equivelent of 1stPage, that sounds good enough to me as other than Notepad in FTP it's all I use.
terminal - i've got no idea what this is, sounds intresting though, i'm gonna take a wild guess that it's the Linux OS?? i'm probably completely wrong but i've seen theres quite a lot to do on it, i've been looking at Kernel patches and upgrades.
LimeWire - I didn't know this was on Linux, nice.
gtk-gnutella - aaahhhh, I forgot about this, heard nothing but good things about it.
rpmfind.net - I've been reading 'Linux Format' to get a better idea of Linux, the problem pages (especially from newbies) seem to dread installing and rpms although the magazine says they're quite helpful, I guess i'll have to make my own opinions on them.
Galeon & Mozilla - i've got both of these programs, you say Galeon is a good thing, everyone uses Mozilla on Linux (so it seems) it's like the MS IE of Linux, which also sounds good to me.
I only got OpenOffice.org because it came free with linux Format along with loads of other tools which have intrigued me and i'm looking forward to getting started with it even though i've been warned about installing on linux, it's all part n parcel of using it, should be very intresting.
My biggest problem at the moment is finding a router so i can get a connection in my room...muwahaha
Anyway, i'm only installing Linux on the PC if all fails i'll try to use it just as a server but i'm hoping it will be fun, you and Luke seem to enjoy it, don't see why other people can't. :)
